Hourglass (Clannad Song)
"Hourglass / Theme from Harry's Game" is a double A-side single by Irish musical group Clannad. It was released in 1989 to promote their best-of '' Past Present''. However, "Hourglass" does not appear on the '' Past Present'' album. This is the band's only double A-side single to date and was only available as a single until it was included on the 2-disc 1997 Netherlands compilation "In a Lifetime: The Ultimate Collection (BMG 74321 488072)" and then again on the 2020 compilation '' In a Lifetime''. Two promotional videos were produced to accompany the single, one for each of the lead songs, "Hourglass" directed by Tim Morris & Pól Brennan, and "Theme from Harry's Game" by Billy Magra. Clannad () is an Irish band formed in 1970 in Gweedore, County Donegal by siblings Ciarán, Pól Brennan, Pól, and Moya Brennan and their twin uncles The Duggans, Noel and Pádraig Duggan. They have adopted various musical styles throughout their history, including folk music, folk, folk rock, Traditional Irish music, traditional Irish, Celtic music, Celtic and new-age music, often incorporating elements of smooth jazz and Gregorian chant. Initially known as ''Clann as Dobhar'', they shortened their name to Clannad in 1973 after winning the Letterkenny, Letterkenny Folk Festival with the song "Liza". By 1979, they had released three albums and completed a successful US tour. From 1980 to 1982, they operated as a six-piece with their sister/niece Enya Brennan on additional keyboards and vocals, before she left the group to pursue a solo career. ''Pastpresent'' is a compilation album by Irish folk group Clannad, released in 1989. It is a collection of selected songs recorded by the band from 1982 up to 1989, including two new songs exclusive to this release (until their inclusion on the 2003 remastered edition of ''Sirius'') – " The Hunter" and "World of Difference". Three singles were released to promote the compilation: "The Hunter", " In a Lifetime" (re-issue) and the band's only double A-side " Hourglass"/"Theme from Harry's Game". However, " Hourglass" does not appear on this compilation and was only available as a single until it was included on the 2-disc 1997 Netherlands compilation In a Lifetime: The Ultimate Collection "(BMG 74321 488072)" and then again on the 2020 compilation '' In a Lifetime''. Theme From Harry's Game
"Theme from ''Harry's Game''" is a 1982 song by Clannad commissioned as the theme for ''Harry's Game'', a Yorkshire Television miniseries adapted from a 1975 novel set in The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was released as a single in October 1982 and became a surprise hit, reaching number 5 in the UK Singles Chart the following month and number 2 in the Irish Singles Chart. Composition The song was written "in a couple of hours", credited to Pól and Ciarán Brennan. Gerald Seymour, author of ''Harry's Game'', originally wanted to use "Mhorag 's Na Horo Gheallaidh", a Scottish Gaelic song from Clannad's album ''Fuaim'', but Clannad felt Irish-language lyrics would be more appropriate. The verse is adapted from a Connacht Irish proverb in a 1948 anthology,; cited in glossed by Máire (Moya) Brennan as "Everything that is and was will cease to be." ''In a Lifetime'' is a greatest hits compilation album by Irish group Clannad. The albums contains two new tracks, "A Celtic Dream" and "Who Knows (Where the Time Goes)", the first recorded by the group since the passing of member Padraig Duggan. Released on 3 April 2020, the album was to coincide with the band's 50th anniversary as a group and they subsequently embarked on a world tour. The ''In a Lifetime'' tour was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
