Houari Benchenet
Houari Benchenet (Arabic: هواري بنشنات), born in Oran on May 25, 1961, is an Algerian raï singer. Biography A native of El Hamri, in Oran. Benchenet is a member of a large family that has no resources other than song. In 1975 he began to sing with the ''derbuka'' drummer in a group influenced by Blaoui Houari and Ahmed Saber. He recorded his first hit in 1977, with Abdelkader Cassidy, titled "Dalali". His became one of the most prolific tenors of Oran song along with Wahby Ahmed, Blaoui Houari , Ahmed Saber or Benzerga. Benchenet is part of the second generation of modern ''rai'' with Khaled, Cheb Sahraoui and Cheb El Hindi, and Cheb Hamid, replacing Bellemou Messaoud , Belkacem Bouteldja Bouteldja Belkacem (5 April 1947 – 1 September 2015 in Oran) was an Algerian raï songwriter, lyricist and composer. Oran ( ar, وَهران, Wahrān) is a major coastal city located in the north-west of Algeria. Raï (, ; ar, راي, Latn, ar, rāʾy, ), sometimes written rai, is a form of Algerian traditional music, folk music that dates back to the 1920s. Singers of Raï are called ''cheb'' (Arabic: شاب) (or ''shabab,'' i.e. young) as opposed to ''sheikh'' (Arabic: شيخ) (''shaykh'', i.e. old), the name given to Chaabi (music), Chaabi singers. Blaoui Houari ( ''Blawī al-Hwārī''; 23 January 1926 – 19 July 2017) was an Algerian singer-songwriter, composer and conductor. Over the course of his career, he recorded over 900 songs and released over 100 albums. Early life Blaoui Houari was born on 23 January 1926 in Oran, Western Algeria, then French Algeria. His father, who owned a bar in Oran, played the Kwitra. Houari left school at 13 to work for his father. Career Houari began his career as a singer-songwriter in the 1940s, when he first played music at weddings and circumcision ceremonies. He also composed songs and played the piano, the guitar, the mandolin and the accordion. He released his first album in 1955, which included a cover of Benyekhlef Boutaleb's song ''Rani M’hayer''. Cheb Sahraoui (born Mohamed Sahraoui, Tlemcen, Algeria, 1 April 1961) is an Algerian raï musician, the first to tour North America and the first to incorporate electronic synthesizers into his arrangements. Messaoud Bellemou ( ar, مسعود بلمو) is an Algerian musician and one of the most influential performers of modern raï music. He is considered by some people like one of the fathers of Modern Raï Music. Bouteldja Belkacem (5 April 1947 – 1 September 2015 in Oran) was an Algerian raï songwriter, lyricist and composer. Biography Bouteldja Belkacem grew up in the El Hamri neighborhood of Oran in Algeria. He is considered a pillar of modern raï. One of those who modernized the raï with Messaoud Bellemou, in the 1960s, he began to use the accordion in place of the zamr, which allowed a rai performer to play and sing at the same time. But since the accordion could not play quarter tones, Bouteldja transformed it by changing the length of the strips of metal inside, making it compatible with the traditional Algerian melodic system. On 9 December 1965, he recorded at Brahim El Feth's, his first tape followed by a disk with two hits. In 1968, his editor left for Paris, and Belkacem Bouteldja to honor his contract had an obligation to go back and forth to record three discs.
