Horrie Gorringe
Horace Charles Gorringe (4 July 1895 – 17 July 1994) was an Australian rules football player in Tasmania, who is considered to have been one of the greatest rovers in the game's history. Family The son of Lowther Gorringe (1864–1927), and Evelyn Sophia Gorringe (1868–1954), née Watson, Horace Charles Gorringe was born on 4 July 1895 at Sandford, Tasmania. He married Myra Muriel Newnham (1899–1992) on 7 February 1929. Football Brighton Rovers In 1912 and 1913 he was playing along with his brother, Eric Lowther John Gorringe (1893–1970), for the Brighton Rovers. Cananore (TFL) Gorringe played for the Cananore club in the Tasmanian Football League between the years 1914 and 1930. He was Club Champion in 1928, winning the Most Consistent award. Glenorchy Football Club
The Glenorchy District Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently playing in the Tasmanian State League and the Southern Football League in Tasmania, Australia. History The club is nicknamed the Magpies after its black and white playing strip, and was originally known as New Town Football Club (wearing a green and white strip) when it started out as a member of the Tasmanian Football League in 1919. New Town changed its name to Glenorchy in 1957 after absorbing the already established club Glenorchy Rovers and relocated its headquarters to KGV Oval at Glenorchy in Hobart's northern suburbs in the same year, playing its first match at the venue on 4 May 1957 against Hobart. Gordon Coventry
Gordon Richard James Coventry (25 September 1901 – 7 November 1968) was a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Wallace Sharland
Wallace Sutherland Sharland (11 October 1902 – 17 September 1967) was an Australian rules football player, journalist and commentator. He played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Sharland, who was commonly known by his nickname '"Jumbo", was recruited from Newtown. Geelong years Sharland was an accomplished ruckman for Geelong, known for his good all-round skills, accurate palming of the ball and capability when required as a ruck shepherd. He debuted for Geelong aged 17 in the 1920 VFL season and in the same year joined the staff of the ''Geelong Advertiser''. His skills as a cricketer came into attention on 29 January 1921 when he scored a century against England's touring Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). 1927 Melbourne Carnival
The 1927 Melbourne Carnival was the sixth Australian National Football Carnival: an Australian rules football interstate competition. New South Wales caused the biggest upset of the carnival when they defeated Tasmania by three points and, also, came close to beating Western Australia. Victoria again finished on top of the table. Peter Hudson
Peter John Hudson AM (born 19 February 1946) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for the New Norfolk Football Club and Glenorchy Football Club in the Tasmanian Australian National Football League (TANFL). A legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Hudson is considered one of the greatest full-forwards in the game's history. He holds the highest career goal-per-game average (5.64) in VFL/AFL history, and is only one of two VFL/AFL footballers (the other being ' John Coleman) to average more than 5 goals per game. Darrel Baldock
Darrel John Baldock AM (29 September 1938 – 2 February 2011) was an Australian sportsman and state politician. He played Australian rules football for the St Kilda Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), East Devonport Football Club and Latrobe Football Club in the North West Football Union (NWFU), and New Norfolk Football Club in the Tasmanian Australian National Football League (TANFL). He was also a handy cricketer, successful racehorse trainer and served in the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Best And Fairest
In Australian sport, the best and fairest award recognises the player(s) adjudged to have had the best performance in a game or over a season for a given sporting club or competition. The awards are sometimes dependent on not receiving a suspension for misconduct or breaching the rules during that season. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpires for being the Fairest and Best player in games during the home and away season. In each game, the umpires award three votes to the player they judge to be the best afield in that game, two votes to the second-best player and one vote to the third-best player. The votes are counted at a gala function on the Monday preceding the Grand Final. William Leitch Medal
The William Leitch Medal, named after the highly regarded former Australian rules player and Tasmanian Football Administrator William Douglas Leitch (1863-1943), was an annual award which was presented to the best and fairest player in the TANFL/TFL Statewide League. At various times prior to 1930 and between 1935 and 1939 the TFL award was known by other names. From 1942 to 1944 the competition was suspended due to World War Two. Following the collapse of both the Tasmanian Football League (TFL) in 1998 and its replacement competitions (the TSFL in 1999 and the SWL in December 2000), the award was suspended until its revival in 2004, awarded to the best and fairest player in the SFL Premier League and from 2009, awarded to the best and fairest player in the SFL.
