Hornell Traction Company
The Hornell Traction Company was an electric streetcar company serving Hornell and Canisteo, New York, between 1892 and 1926. Beginnings The Hornellsville Electric Railway Company was formed December 16, 1891; President was Charles Adsit, Secretary was Demerville Page, and Treasurer was George T. Rehn. The Canisteo Valley Railway Company was formed on December 28, 1891, with plans to run a line to Jasper, Woodhull, and Addison; President was William T. Bailey and Vice-President William Potter. It never began operations. The Hornellsville & Canisteo Railway Company was formed May 12, 1892; President was Page, Secretary was Adsit, and Treasurer was Rehn. It took over the assets and "certain obligations" of the previous company. Both companies shared a depot and car barn at Adsit and Thacher Streets in Hornell. Streetcar
A tram (called a streetcar or trolley in North America) is a rail vehicle that travels on tramway tracks on public urban streets; some include segments on segregated right-of-way. Glenwood Inn (Hornellsville, New York)
The Glenwood Inn was "one of the best known summer resorts in this section of the state and Hornell's leading place of recreation". Glenwood Park was south of Hornellsville (after 1906, Hornell) and north of Canisteo, at Midway Court, in the hamlet of South Hornell. in size, it was developed by the owners of the Hornellsville & Canisteo Electric Railroad, inaugurated in 1892, on "a wooded glen and bluff" and "a mile of river" they purchased, so as to build ridership by creating a destination. The Inn opened in 1895. Adjacent to it were a dance hall, which also served as a skating rink, a bandstand/pavilion, merry-go-round, picnic tables, a tennis court, and a boathouse where rowboats could be rented for use in an artificial lake created by a small dam on the Canisteo River. New York State Route 36 (NY 36) is a north–south state highway in the western part of New York in the United States. The highway extends for from the Pennsylvania state line at Troupsburg, Steuben County northward to Ogden, Monroe County, where it ends at an intersection with NY 31. Brockport, New York
Brockport is a village in the Town of Sweden, with two tiny portions in the Town of Clarkson, in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 7,104 at the 2020 U.S. Census. The name is derived from Heil Brockway, an early settler. It is also home to The College at Brockport, State University of New York. The ''Buffalo Courier-Express'' was a morning newspaper in Buffalo, New York. It ceased publication on September 19, 1982. History The ''Courier-Express'' was created in 1926 by a merger of the ''Buffalo Daily Courier'' and the ''Buffalo Morning Express.'' William James Conners, the owner of the ''Buffalo Courier'', brought the two papers together. The combined newspapers claimed a heritage dating to 1828. Dansville is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States, not to be confused with the nearby village of Dansville in Livingston County. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. Arkport is a village in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 844 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the barges used to ship products through the village. The postal code is 14807. The Village of Arkport is in the Town of Hornellsville and is north of the City of Hornell. Hornell Municipal Airport (HTF) is immediately south of the village. History Arkport was founded in 1797 by Christopher Hurlbut. The Canisteo River was used to ship crops, livestock, and timber to Baltimore using arks. The navigable portion of the river ended in Arkport; thus the name of ark-port. Hammondsport is a village at the south end of Keuka Lake, in Steuben County, one of the Finger Lakes of New York, United States. Keuka Lake
Keuka Lake ( ) is one of the major Finger Lakes in the U.S. state of New York. It is unusual because it is Y-shaped, in contrast to the long and narrow shape of the other Finger Lakes. Because of its shape, it was referred to in the past as Crooked Lake. ''Keuka'' means "canoe landing" in the Iroquois language and "lake with an elbow" in the Seneca language. Description The Y-shaped Keuka Lake empties into another Finger Lake, Seneca Lake, through a stream called Keuka Lake Outlet at the lake's northeastern end in Penn Yan.
