Horace DeVauhan
Horace DeVaughan (died April 8, 1927), of Birmingham, Alabama, was the first prison inmate in Alabama (We dare defend our rights) , anthem = "Alabama (state song), Alabama" , image_map = Alabama in United States.svg , seat = Montgomery, Alabama, Montgomery , LargestCity = Huntsville, Alabama, Huntsville , LargestCounty = Baldwin County, Al ... to be executed by the Alabama electric chair, nicknamed " Yellow Mama" because it was painted with bright yellow highway paint. DeVaughan was electrocuted on April 8, 1927. The murder case for which DeVaughan was executed was solved by Birmingham Police Detective Paul Cole, who traced the shells found at the scene, which had a unique marking from a defective shotgun. After he was arrested, DeVaughan confessed to the murders and was sentenced to death. DeVaughan was put to death at Kilby Prison in an electric chair built for the purpose earlier that year. Electric Chair
An electric chair is a device used to execute an individual by electrocution. When used, the condemned person is strapped to a specially built wooden chair and electrocuted through electrodes fastened on the head and leg. This execution method, conceived in 1881 by a Buffalo, New York dentist named Alfred P. Southwick, was developed throughout the 1880s as a supposed humane alternative to hanging, and first used in 1890. The electric chair has been used in the United States and, for several decades, in the Philippines. While death was originally theorized to result from damage to the brain, it was shown in 1899 that it primarily results from ventricular fibrillation and eventual cardiac arrest. Yellow Mama
Yellow Mama is the electric chair of the U.S. state of Alabama. It was used for executions from 1927 to 2002. First installed at Kilby State Prison in Montgomery, Alabama, the chair acquired its yellow color (and from it, the nickname "Yellow Mama") when it was painted with highway-line paint from the adjacent State Highway Department lab. The chair was built by British inmate Ed Mason in 1927 and was first used to execute Horace DeVauhan in that year. Mason was rewarded for his efforts with a thirty day pass, but he absconded and was later found in a New York state penitentiary. The last person put to death in Yellow Mama was Lynda Lyon Block, who was executed in 2002.
