History The area was named after colonial aristocrat Captain Louis Hope, who in 1867 was granted the island then known as Boykambil near the mouth of the Coomera River in recognition of his contribution in developing the sugar industry in Queensland. After arriving in Moreton Bay in 1848, Hope spent the next 20 years building sugar plantations on the edge of Moreton Bay. The development of a sugar plantation called ‘Rockholm’ on the Island was largely undertaken by the Grimes Family. Hope Islands National Park is a national park in Queensland ( Australia) 1,521 km north-west of Brisbane. The park consists of four islands: East Hope and West Hope, Snapper Island and Struck Island. The Hope Islands are situated approximately 37 km south-east of Cooktown and about 8 km offshore () and officially part of the mainland locality of Rossville. Struck Island is a rocky outcrop just off Thornton Beach and south of Cape Tribulation. Snapper island is about two km long and is at the mouth of the Daintree River. Kangeq
Kangeq or Kangek (Kalaallisut: "Promontory") is a former settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland. It is located on the same island that formed the first Danish colony on Greenland between 1721 and 1728. History As a coastal settlement, Kangeq was positioned on the migration route of the ancient Inuit peoples. Archeological finds from the Dorset culture era have been found near Kangeq. The Dorset people had vanished from the Nuuk region prior to 1000 CE. Hopen, Svalbard
Hopen is an island in the southeastern part of the Svalbard archipelago (Norway). Hopen was discovered in 1596 by Jan Cornelisz Rijp during the third expedition by Willem Barentsz, trying to find the Northeast Passage. Later, in 1613, its name was given by Thomas Marmaduke of Hull, who named it after his former command, the ''Hopewell''. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute operates a staffed weather station on the island with a staff of four persons. For the welfare of the crew, there are three cabins available on the island for their use. During World War II, the Luftwaffe placed a meteorological team there under cover of Operation Zitronella. On August 28, 1978 an early model Tupolev Tu-16 of the Soviet Air Force crashed on the island. All seven crew were killed in the accident. Hope Island (Maine)
Hope Island is a privately owned island in Casco Bay near the city of Portland, Maine, United States. It is a part of the Town of Chebeague Island, in Cumberland County. The island was considered for an LNG terminal. Developer John Cacoulidis and his wife Phyllis bought the island in 1993. In addition to the existing 10,000 sq. ft. house built in 1913 with nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms and five fireplaces, the Cacoulidises built there a separate 3,300-square-foot guest house, a boathouse with an apartment, and roads looping the island. They've also erected horse stables, a chicken coop, a garage and their own church, and for access both a boat dock and a helicopter pad. In a dispute over property taxes, the two part-time residents attempted but failed in a legislative effort to secede from the town of Cumberland.
