Holton, Kansas
Holton is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,401. History The party that chose the site of Holton started at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in May 1856. A train of six covered wagons, each drawn by two yoke of oxen, started the long trek to take Free State settlers to Kansas. They were financed by the Kansas Society of Milwaukee which was headed by Edward Dwight Holton, the Milwaukee abolitionist. They met General James H. Lane with two hundred men at Nebraska City, Nebraska, a rendezvous for Free State men. They followed the ''Jim Lane Road'' into Kansas approximately thirty miles. They came to Elk Creek, 2½ miles west of Holton, where they cut timbers to make a bridge, crossed it and made camp where Central School now stands. Denison, Kansas
Denison is a city in Jackson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 146. History 19th century Denison was founded as a result of the ''Kansas City, Wyandotte and Northwestern Railway'' laying tracks that would connect the communities of Valley Falls and Holton. The railroad was slated to come through one mile south of an existing village, Tippinville, and in September 1887, A.D. Walker and Hollis Tucker, land speculators, laid out lots for a new town, which was named after Tucker's hometown, Denison, Ohio. Most of the houses and two churches in Tippinville were bodily moved to the new townsite, which is primarily in Garfield Township, with a small portion in Cedar Township (it was all Cedar Township at first). Holton High School is a public high school in Holton, Kansas, United States, operated by Holton USD 336 school district, and serves students of 9 to 12. The school's mascot is a wildcat and the school's colors are blue and white. Rod Wittmer is the school's current principal and about 304 students are enrolled in grades 9-12. History Holton High School had its first graduating class in 1881. The current Holton High School site was originally home to Campbell College from its opening in 1880, to its merger with Lane University in 1902, until 1913, when it was relocated to Kansas City and merged with Kansas City University. North Jackson USD 335 is a unified school district headquartered about four miles north of Holton, Kansas, United States. The district includes the communities of Circleville, Netawaka, Soldier, Whiting, and nearby rural areas. The high school is notable for having previously been an Atlas nuclear missile site. History The site of the current high school previous housed a command center and one of the nine Atlas nuclear missiles from 1961 until its closure in 1964 and then sat empty for five years. A patron, Duane Wilson, then purchased the retired base from the federal government for the sum of $1.00 on behalf of the new Jackson Heights school district. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956.
