__NOTOC__ Holmes is a suburb in the Northern Territory of Australia located in Darwin. Holmes is located at the eastern end of the Darwin urban area with its south-westerly corner being located near the intersection of the major roads of McMillans Road and Vanderlin Drive. Its southern end includes the protected area, the Holmes Jungle Nature Park, while its northern end includes the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, the waste management facility operated by the City of Darwin. Holmes’ name is derived from Holmes Jungle, an area of uncleared vegetation now located within the suburb’s boundary, and ultimately from Felix Holmes, a resident of the Northern Territory during the 1920s and 1930s and who is described by one source as a “prominent NT citizen”. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Holmes Jungle Nature Park
Holmes Jungle Nature Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia consisting of a small, relatively isolated area of monsoon forest at the edge of northern suburbs of the territorial capital of Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin. It provided a habitat for a large variety of native birds, mammals and reptiles which are able to breed and find refuge in the thick vegetation. The area of the park is approximately 250 hectares and Pine Creek winds its way through the park to its centre. The creek connects up other waterways of the Shoal Bay area and saltwater crocodiles can always be present. The park provides an interesting field trip for locals, young families and visitors. Once known as "Holtze Jungle" after the Government Gardener Maurice William Holtze who held land in the area, it was renamed "Holmes Jungle" after Felix Holmes, a butcher who once raised cattle in the area. McMillans Road
McMillans Road is a major arterial road in the northern and eastern suburbs of Darwin, Northern Territory Australia. The road provides an access route for some of the city's most important infrastructure including Darwin International Airport, Northern Territory Institute of Sport, Marrara Oval and the headquarters and training college of the Northern Territory Police. It is also the main road access to Crocodylus Park, a major tourist attraction boasting a crocodile farm and small zoo. The road is named for the McMillan brothers as it was originally the access to pastoral leases they held in the 1920s and 1930s. Karama is a northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History The suburb of Karama is named after an Aboriginal tribe. Karama is an established residential area in Darwin's northern suburbs built in the period from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Leanyer is a northern suburb of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History The name Leanyer was in general use for the area at the time of development and first appeared on 1869 survey plans. Leanyer is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word. During World War II Leanyer was established as a military area, there was an Army post and a military equipment storage facility, gun turrets were also set up along the coast of Lee Point. It was disbanded soon after the end of World War II and residential development of Leanyer started during the 1970s.
