Holmedal Church
Holmedal Church ( no, Holmedal kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Askvoll Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Holmedal, on the northern shore of the Dalsfjorden. It is one of several churches for the Askvoll parish which is part of the Sunnfjord prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1868 using plans drawn up by the architect Christian Christie. The church seats about 400 people. History Holmedal is an ancient church site, which in former times was the parish centre for a relatively large area. The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1305, but the church was not new that year. The first known church was a wooden stave church that was likely built during the 13th century. Fjaler
Fjaler is a municipality in the county of Vestland, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative centre is the village of Dale. Other places in Fjaler include Espedal, Flekke, Folkestad, Guddal, and Hellevika. Fjaler was the birthplace of famous Norwegian poet Jakob Sande. Dalsfjorden (Sunnfjord)
Dalsfjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the municipalities of Askvoll, Fjaler, and Sunnfjord. It is one of the two main fjords that comprise the Sunnfjord region of the county. The fjord is about long and it is generally about wide. The Dalsfjorden is a narrow fjord that cuts into roughly eastwards from the village of Vilnes on the island of Atløyna in Askvoll municipality. Askvoll is the administrative centre of Askvoll Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the western coast of the mainland, just north of the mouth of the Dalsfjorden in the Sunnfjord region of the county. Western Norway ( nb, Vestlandet, Vest-Norge; nn, Vest-Noreg) is the region along the Atlantic coast of southern Norway. It consists of the counties Rogaland, Vestland, and Møre og Romsdal. Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The administrative centre of the county is the city of Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based, but the County Governor is based in Hermansverk. Sunnfjord ( en, the southern fjord - in contrast to Nordfjord) is a traditional district in Western Norway located in Vestland county. It includes the municipalities of Askvoll, Fjaler, the southernmost parts of Kinn, Sunnfjord, and the southernmost parts of Bremanger. It covers an area of about and has a population (2016) of 43,324–about 8% of the population of Vestland county. The central geographical characteristic of the Sunnfjord region are the fjords: Dalsfjorden and Førdefjorden.
