Holland With Boston (UK Parliament Constituency)
Holland with Boston was a county constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1997. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. History The constituency was created in 1918 and abolished in 1997. By the time of its abolition, it was a safe Conservative seat. However, Holland with Boston had been held by both the Liberal and Labour parties before the Second World War. From 1885 to 1918 the parliamentary borough of Boston returned one MP, while the Lincolnshire county division of Spalding, in the south-east of the historic county, elected another MP. In 1918 these two seats were merged to form this constituency. When created in 1918 the constituency had the same boundaries as the traditional sub-division of the historic county known as the Parts of Holland, which had become an administrative county in 1889. Holland, Lincolnshire
The Parts of Holland is a historical division of Lincolnshire, England, encompassing the south-east of the county. The name is still recognised locally and survives in the district of South Holland. Administration Parts of Holland was one of the three medieval divisions, called ' Parts', of Lincolnshire (the other two being Lindsey and Kesteven) which had long had separate county administrations ( quarter sessions). Under the Local Government Act 1888 it obtained a county council, which it retained until 1974. At that point the three county councils were abolished and Lincolnshire (minus the northern part of Lindsey, which formed part of Humberside) had a single county council for the first time. Before the changes of 1888, Holland had, since probably the tenth century, been divided into the three wapentakes of Elloe, Kirton and Skirbeck. William Royce (politician)
William Stapleton Royce (13 December 1858 – 23 June 1924) was an English Labour Party politician who served as Member of Parliament for the Holland with Boston constituency from 1918 until 1924. He was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire, and was educated at the Willesby School and at Pretty's Commercial School, Spalding. On leaving school he was apprenticed to a joiner, but served only two years of his apprenticeship before running away to London, where he worked on the construction of the General Post Office building in St Martin's-le-Grand. Three months later, he learned that the Government of Cape Town was offering free passage to South Africa for men to build the railways in that country. He accepted a three-year contract, at the end of which he had saved enough money to set up in business on his own account. 1918 United Kingdom General Election
The 1918 United Kingdom general election was called immediately after the Armistice with Germany which ended the First World War, and was held on Saturday, 14 December 1918. The governing coalition, under Prime Minister David Lloyd George, sent letters of endorsement to candidates who supported the coalition government. These were nicknamed "Coalition Coupons", and led to the election being known as the "coupon election". The result was a massive landslide in favour of the coalition, comprising primarily the Conservatives and Coalition Liberals, with massive losses for Liberals who were not endorsed. Nearly all the Liberal MPs without coupons were defeated, including party leader H. H. Asquith. Spalding was a rural district in Holland in Lincolnshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 from the Spalding rural sanitary district. East Elloe Rural District
East Elloe was a rural district in Holland in Lincolnshire from 1894 to 1974. History The district had its origins in the Holbeach Poor Law Union, which had been established in 1835 covering Holbeach and several surrounding parishes. It was administered from the Holbeach Union Workhouse, which was built in 18361837 on Fleet Road in Holbeach. In 1872, sanitary districts were established, with public health and local government responsibilities given to the existing boards of guardians of poor law unions for areas without an existing urban authority. The Holbeach Rural Sanitary District therefore covered the area of the Holbeach Poor Law Union except for Holbeach itself, Long Sutton, and Sutton Bridge, each of which had a local board of health and so formed their own urban sanitary districts. Spalding, Lincolnshire
Spalding () is a market town on the River Welland in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, England. The town had a population of 31,588 at the 2011 census. The town is the administrative centre of the South Holland District. The town is located between the cities of Peterborough and Lincoln, as well as the towns of Bourne, March, Boston, Wisbech, Holbeach and Sleaford. The town was well known for the annual Spalding Flower Parade, held from 1959 to 2013.
