Hold 'Em Navy
''That Navy Spirit'' is a 1937 American sports film directed by Kurt Neumann (director), Kurt Neumann and starring Lew Ayres, Mary Carlisle and John Howard (American actor), John Howard.Quinlan p.274 It is also known by the alternative title ''Hold 'Em Navy''. It follows two members of the American football team at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis who compete over the same girl before the varsity game against West Point. Plot As first-year "plebes" at the Naval Academy, newcomers Tommy and Stuffy are subjected to rude treatment by the upperclassmen. After one of them, Chuck Baldwin, gives him a hard time, Tommy decides to invite Chuck's sweetheart Judy to a school ball. Tommy is also a talented football quarterback, but because Chuck informs on him being out after curfew, Tommy is suspended from the team and Navy loses the game. Kurt Neumann (director)
Kurt Neumann (5 April 1908 – 21 August 1958) was a German Hollywood (film industry), Hollywood film director who specialized in science fiction movies in his later career. Biography Born in Nuremberg, the son of a manufacturer of tin stamps studied music in several German cities, including Berlin. In 1926 he directed his first short movie. Neumann came to the U.S. in the early talkie era, hired to direct German language versions of Hollywood films. Alan Ladd
Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913 – January 29, 1964) was an American actor and film producer. Ladd found success in film in the 1940s and early 1950s, particularly in films noir and Westerns. John Hubbard (April 14, 1914 – November 6, 1988) was an American television and film actor. Career MGM changed Hubbard's professional name to Anthony Allen and cast him in modest feature films and short subjects for one year. In 1939, Hal Roach signed John Hubbard (under his given name) as one of five promising young actors with "star" potential (the other four were Lon Chaney, Jr., Victor Mature, Carole Landis, and William Bendix). Roach saw something in Hubbard, whose handsome features lent themselves to romantic roles while his dialogue skills allowed him to play farce comedy.
