Hokandara
Hokandara is a suburb of Colombo. It is located approximately from the city centre of Colombo, adjacent to Thalawathugoda to the west, Pelawatte on the north-west, Malabe on the north, Aturugiriya on the east and Pannipitiya on the south. It sits astride the Hokandara-Kottawa Road and the Malabe-Aturugiriya (Borella) Road. Originally a working-class and farming area, since the 1990s Hokandara has become an increasingly upper-middle and middle-class residential area. Sub areas such as Arangala, Everihena, Wellangiriya and Horahena belongs to Hokandara. Thalawathugoda ( si, තලවතුගොඩ, ta, தலவத்துகொட) is a suburb of Colombo. It is located approximately from the city centre of Colombo, adjacent to Battaramulla and Pelawatte on the Borella-Kottawa Road, bordering Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte. The Diyawanna Oya (Parliament Lake) forms the "Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte" boundary of Thalawathugoda. The suburb is a rapidly developing residential area with many facilities. New modern luxury housing schemes are being developed around Kalalgoda Road and Hokandara Road to cater to high end housing demand. A notable expatriate and upper middle class local population resides in Thalawathugoda. Battle Of Mulleriyawa
The Battle of Mulleriyawa ( si, මුල්ලේරියාව සටන) in 1559 was part of the Sinhalese–Portuguese War. It was one of the most decisive battles in Sri Lankan history and considered as the worst defeat of Portuguese during that period. According to local chronicles the marshlands of Mulleriyawa turned red with blood after the annihilation of the Portuguese. With this victory Sitawaka emerged as a military power which able to challenge the Portuguese expansion. Background Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka in 1505 and established trade relations with kingdom of Kotte. They erected a fortress in Colombo and garrisoned it. In 1521, King Vijayabahu VI's three sons mutinied against their father. Pannipitiya
Pannipitiya ( si, පන්නිපිටිය, ta, பன்னிபிட்டிய) is a suburb of Colombo. It is an area in Colombo District, Sri Lanka and is located about from the commercial capital. Pannipitiya is subdivided into a number of smaller areas. Areas in Pannipitiya *Pannipitiya Junction - Junction which connects the Borella Road with the Old Road. The Pannipitiya post office and train station are situated here. There is a cross road from Pannipitiya town that connects it to the High Level Road (A4) which is running close by. Rajasinha I Of Sitawaka
Rajasinghe I ( Sinhala:පළමුවන රාජසිංහ) was a king of Sitawaka, known for his patriotism and fight against the Portuguese invasion of Sri Lanka. Born as Tikiri Bandara to King Mayadunne, he received the name "Rajasinha" (meaning ''the Lion King'') after the fierce Battle of Mulleriyawa. Ascent to throne Generally, the recorded period of Rajasinha's reign starts from 1581 to 1592. However, as per Portuguese navigator De Queros, Mayadunne had turned the kingdom over to Rajasinha in 1578 before his death in 1581. Kottawa
Kottawa ( si, කොට්ටාව, ta, கொட்டாவை) is one of the main suburbs in Colombo, Sri Lanka and is administered by the Maharagama Urban Council. It is located from the centre of Colombo. History The name Kottawa is derived from the Sinhalese phrase ''kotten awa'', meaning "The city of greats". Later the name was shortened to "Kottawa".
