Hodonín Power Station
Hodonín (; german: Göding) is a town in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 24,000 inhabitants. Administrative parts Hodonín is made up of only one administrative part. Geography Hodonín is located about southeast of Brno, on the border with Slovakia. It lies in a flat landscape of the Lower Morava Valley. It is situated on the right bank of the Morava (river), Morava River, which forms here the Czech-Slovak border. The western municipal border is formed by the Kyjovka River, which supplies a set of eight ponds. History The castle in Hodonín was founded sometime in the 11th century. However, the document from 1046 which was the oldest mention of the castle, is demonstrably a forgery. The first written credible mention of Hodonín is from 1169. In 1228 it became a town. Oil And Gas Deposits In The Czech Republic
Oil and gas deposits in the Czech Republic are small, and located mainly in southern Moravia. Oil and gas exploration in this area started in the early years of the 20th century. The first commercial oil extraction was in 1919. In 2005 340,600 m³ of crude oil and 98.75 million m³ of natural gas was extracted. Henry Kučera
Henry Kučera (15 February 1925 – 20 February 2010), born Jindřich Kučera () was a Czech-American linguist who pioneered corpus linguistics, linguistic software, a major contributor to the ''American Heritage Dictionary'', and a pioneer in the development of spell checking computer software. He is remembered in particular as one of the initiators of the Brown Corpus. Early life and education Kučera was born in Třebařov (between Pardubice and Olomouc) in Czechoslovakia and later moved with his family to Hodonín, where he studied. When the Communists came to power in February 1948, his studies in philosophy and linguistics at Charles University in the Czech capital of Prague were interrupted. He was forced to leave Czechoslovakia in April 1948 when it became clear that his political writings had placed him at risk of detention by the Communist authorities. Moravské naftové doly (MND) is a Czech oil and gas producing company based in Hodonín, Czech Republic, producing of oil and 250,000 m3 of gas per day. With gas storage facilities of 180 million m3, MND is an important player on European gas market. MND has also a retail and trading unit. KKCG company is the sole shareholder. Tomáš Baťa
Tomáš Baťa () (3 April 1876 – 12 July 1932) was a Czech entrepreneur and founder of the Bata shoe company. His career was cut short when he died in a plane accident due to bad weather. His half-brother Jan Antonín Baťa took over his company, expanding it during the Great Depression. World War II resulted in much destruction of his businesses. After Communist governments were established in Czechoslovakia and other nations of Eastern Europe, they nationalized the Baťa enterprises, taking over the company. Tomáš's son Thomas J. Bata rebuilt and expanded shoe manufacturing in the company name after moving to Canada in 1939, at the time of the Nazi invasion and annexation of Czechoslovakia. Career Tomáš Baťa established the organization in Zlín on 24 August 1894 with 800 Austrian gulden (equivalent to $320 at the time), inherited from his mother. Baťa Canal
Baťa Canal (in Czech ''Baťův kanál'' or ''Průplav Otrokovice-Rohatec'') is a navigable canal on the Morava river in the Czech Republic. The water canal was built during 1934-38 and today it serves mainly for recreational cruises. History Reasons for building the canal were two: an attempt to increase the level of groundwater after the Morava river was regulated and as an initial phase of long planned but never realized Danube-Oder-Canal. The immediate reason for the construction was the need to transfer lignite from mine in Ratíškovice to the Otrokovice power plant. Both were owned by Bata Shoes (''Baťovy závody'') and the company was the main investor (the rest was paid for by the state). Construction started on October 16, 1934 and finished during autumn 1938.
