Hochwannig
The Wannig (also Hochwannig or Wanneck) is a 2,493-metre-high mountain in the Mieming Chain in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Location The Wannig forms the western end of the Mieming Range. To the southwest lies the village of Nassereith in the Gurgltal valley, to the south is the Holzleiten Saddle that links the Gurgltal with the Mieming Plateau. To the north lies the Fern Pass, a crossing from the Gurgltal to Biberwier in the Ehrwald Basin. To the east the Mieming Chain continues with the ''Handschuhspitzen'' and the Marienbergjoch (1,789 m). The upper 400m of the Wannig are characterised by crags and boulder fields, below which is a wide belt of mountain pine. In the lower regions of its western and southern slopes are the remains of old mine workings. Here in the Feigenstein Field (''Revier Feigenstein''), lead and zinc ore (Smithsonite) was mined. Mieming Chain
The Mieming(er) Range, Mieminger Chain (german: Mieminger Kette) or Mieminger Mountains (''Mieminger Gebirge''), is a mountain range of the Northern Limestone Alps in the Eastern Alps. It is located entirely in Austria within the state of Tyrol. This sub-group is somewhat in the shadows of its more famous neighbour, the Wetterstein to the north. Whilst the region around the Coburger Hut and the lakes of Seebensee and Drachensee in the west ( Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze and Vorderer Tajakopf with its new ''klettersteig'' over the Tajakante) and the Hohe Munde in the extreme east receive large numbers of visitors, the less developed central area remains very quiet. The Hohe Munde is also a popular and challenging ski touring destination. Public transport links: The Außerfern Railway stops at Ehrwald on the western side of the range. Two-thousanders Of Austria
Two-thousanders are mountains that have a height of at least 2,000 metres above sea level, but less than 3,000 metres. The term is used in Alpine circles, especially in Europe (e.g. German: ''Zweitausender''). The two photographs show two typical two-thousanders in the Alps that illustrate different types of mountain. The Säuling (top) is a prominent, individual peak, whereas the Schneeberg (bottom) is an elongated limestone massif. The ''Alpine Club Guides'' (german: Alpenvereinsführer, commonly shortened to ''AV Führer'' or ''AVF'') are the standard series of Alpine guides that cover all the important mountain groups in the Eastern Alps. They are produced jointly by the German (DAV), Austrian (ÖAV) and South Tyrol Alpine Clubs (AVS). They have been published since 1950 by the firm of Bergverlag Rother in Munich, Germany. The AV guides contain all the routes – hiking trails, mountain hut approaches and summit climbs as well as ice and high mountain routes and ''klettersteigs'' in each mountain range. The South Tyrol Alpine Club (german: Alpenverein Südtirol), abbreviated AVS, is an association of German and Ladin-speaking mountain climbers in South Tyrol, northern Italy. Founded in 1946, it is sub-divided into 32 sections and 58 local divisions. The AVS is based in Bolzano and has more than 60,000 members. The Austrian Alpine Club (german: Österreichischer Alpenverein) has about 573,000 members in 196 sections and is the largest mountaineering organisation in Austria. Smithsonite
Smithsonite, also known as zinc spar, is the mineral form of zinc carbonate ( Zn CO3). Historically, smithsonite was identified with hemimorphite before it was realized that they were two different minerals. The two minerals are very similar in appearance and the term calamine has been used for both, leading to some confusion. The distinct mineral smithsonite was named in 1832 by François Sulpice Beudant in honor of English chemist and mineralogist James Smithson (c.1765–1829), who first identified the mineral in 1802. Smithsonite is a variably colored trigonal mineral which only rarely is found in well formed crystals. The typical habit is as earthy botryoidal masses.
