Hjelme
Hjelme is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county in Norway. The municipality was located within the northern part of the present-day municipality of Øygarden. It existed from 1910 until 1964. The administrative centre was located at Hjelme, where the Old Hjelme Church was located. The municipality included the main islands of Alvøyna, Seløyna, Lyngøyna, and Hernar as well as many smaller surrounding islands. The Fedjeosen strait was the northern boundary, the Hjeltefjorden was the eastern boundary, the small ''Nordra Straumøysundet'' strait was the southern boundary, and the North Sea was to the west. History On 1 January 1910, the western district of the municipality of Manger (population: 986) was separated to form its own municipality called ''Hjelmen''. Old Hjelme Church
Old Hjelme Church ( no, Hjelme gamle kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Øygarden Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hjelmo on the island of Seløyna. It is one of the three churches in the ''Hjelme og Blomvåg'' parish which is part of the Vesthordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1875 using plans drawn up by the architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. The church seats about 180 people. History The church was built in 1875 to serve the people on the Øygarden archipelago, who previously had to cross the Hjeltefjorden to go to the Manger Church or Hordabø Church. The new church was designed by Jacob Wilhelm Nordan and it was originally titled or . The church was consecrated on 5 August 1875. History The Old Hjelme Church was built in 1875 to serve the northern part of what is now Øygarden. That church stood at Hjelmo, about from the present church site. In the late 1960s, the parish wanted a newer, larger church. It was decided to build a new church on the main road, closer to the main population center on Hellesøyna. This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. In 2002 Erna Solberg, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development at the time, expressed a wish to reduce the current tally with 100. Hordaland
Hordaland () was a county in Norway, bordering Sogn og Fjordane, Buskerud, Telemark, and Rogaland counties. Hordaland was the third largest county, after Akershus and Oslo, by population. The county government was the Hordaland County Municipality, which is located in Bergen. Before 1972, the city of Bergen was its own separate county, apart from Hordaland. Seløyna
Seløyna or Seløy is an island in Øygarden municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island is the northernmost of the large populated islands in the Øygarden archipelago. It is connected to the island of Alvøyna by a short bridge over the Vikesundet strait. The small island of Førehjelmo lies just to the north of Seløyna, and there is a small bridge connecting to it. The island was once part of the old municipality of Hjelme which existed until 1964. The island is home to two churches: the Old Hjelme Church in the small, coastal village of Hjelmo and the "new" Hjelme Church is centrally located along the main road crossing the island of Seløyna. Manger (municipality)
Manger is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located in what is now Alver Municipality in Vestland county. Upon its dissolution in 1964, Manger encompassed . The municipality originally included almost all of the island of Radøy, the northern part of the island of Holsnøy, and all the islands of northern Øygarden. Over time, the municipality was reduced in size several times, so that by 1964, it was just the central part of Radøy island.
