Hjelme Kyrkje
Hjelme is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county in Norway. The municipality was located within the northern part of the present-day municipality of Øygarden. It existed from 1910 until 1964. The administrative centre was located at Hjelme, where the Old Hjelme Church was located. The municipality included the main islands of Alvøyna, Seløyna, Lyngøyna, and Hernar as well as many smaller surrounding islands. The Fedjeosen strait was the northern boundary, the Hjeltefjorden was the eastern boundary, the small ''Nordra Straumøysundet'' strait was the southern boundary, and the North Sea was to the west. History On 1 January 1910, the western district of the municipality of Manger (population: 986) was separated to form its own municipality called ''Hjelmen''. Old Hjelme Church
Old Hjelme Church ( no, Hjelme gamle kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Øygarden Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hjelmo on the island of Seløyna. It is one of the three churches in the ''Hjelme og Blomvåg'' parish which is part of the Vesthordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1875 using plans drawn up by the architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. The church seats about 180 people. History The church was built in 1875 to serve the people on the Øygarden archipelago, who previously had to cross the Hjeltefjorden to go to the Manger Church or Hordabø Church. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Hjelme Church
Hjelme Church ( no, Hjelme kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Øygarden Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the central part of the island of Seløyna. It is one of the three churches in the ''Hjelme og Blomvåg'' parish which is part of the Vesthordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, concrete church was built in a rectangular design in 1971 using plans drawn up by the architect Arne S. Halvorsen. The church seats about 340 people. History The Old Hjelme Church was built in 1875 to serve the northern part of what is now Øygarden. That church stood at Hjelmo, about from the present church site. In the late 1960s, the parish wanted a newer, larger church. It was decided to build a new church on the main road, closer to the main population center on Hellesøyna. Manger Church ( no, Manger kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Manger on the island of Radøy. It is one of the four churches in the Radøy parish which is part of the Nordhordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. Herdla
Herdla is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1871 until its dissolution in 1964. The municipality encompassed a large group of about 2,000 islands and skerries covering about of land area, to the northwest of the city of Bergen in what is now parts of Øygarden, Alver, and Askøy municipalities in Vestland county. Schei Committee
The Schei Committee ( no, Schei-komitéen) was a committee named by the Government of Norway to look into the organization of municipalities in Norway post-World War II. It convened in 1946, and its formal name was (The 1946 Committee on Municipal Division). Its more commonly used name derives from the committee leader, Nikolai Schei Nikolai Andreas Schei (9 May 1901 – 25 May 1985) was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant.
