Hjaltalín
Hjaltalín is an Icelandic indie rock band that has published four studio albums as of 2020. Their second record, ''Terminal'', was chosen as the album of the year at the 2010 Icelandic Music Awards. They have also played throughout Europe, most notably at Roskilde and Latitude festivals (2009) and at Sziget Festival (2010). History Hjaltalín was formed in Reykjavík, Iceland in 2004. Between January and October 2007, they recorded their first album, ''Sleepdrunk Seasons'', in Reykjavík and Amsterdam. It was released on the Icelandic label Kimi Records first, and a European release followed in 2009. The band had a major hit with a cover of Paul Oscar's "Þú komst við hjartað í mér" in 2008, which proved to be the most popular song in Iceland that year. The Icelandic Music Awards ( is, Íslensku tónlistarverðlaunin) are the official annual music awards given in Iceland to commemorate the musical achievements of the year. The award was established in 1993 with an annual rock award given by the Félag íslenskra hljómlistarmanna (FÍH) (''Union of Icelandic Musicians''); since then, it has developed into a multi-category event held usually in January or February for awards of the previous year. Since 2002, the event has been sponsored by the Icelandic Music Association known as ''Samtónn''. Roskilde Festival 2009
Roskilde Festival 2009 was held on 2–5 July with warmup from 28 June. The final and 180th act was announced on 15 June. Sales The audience kept an eye on the weather forecasts before making up their mind to go or not. In any case, the ticket sale stats showed themselves from a somewhat unpredictable side, and it was difficult to tell how large an audience to expect at Roskilde Festival 2009. When the festival was about to begin, rumours said that about 60,000 of 75,000 tickets were sold. However, it turned out that many more people wanted to take part in the festival. 67,000 all-week tickets were sold, and a new initiative – one-day tickets – were sold to over 12,000 people on top of this. Despite a non-sold-out festival, accounts showed a nice profit. In 2010 Roskilde Festival could proudly present an overall profit of 2.7 million euro from the 2009th festival, which is the best economic result in the festival's 39-year-old existence. Kimi Records
Kimi Records is an Icelandic independent record label and distribution company. History Kimi Records was founded in 2007 by Baldvin Esra Einarsson and his wife out of Akureyri, Iceland. The Kimi Records roster includes mainly Icelandic inde rock acts, but also includes bands belonging to other genres of music and despite its young age, Kimi records have also released non-Icelandic acts. Kimi Records started out as a record company and distributed their own music on their own. The label has also distributed releases by artists such as FM Belfast, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Leaves, Seabear and Stórsveit Nix Noltes. In 2009 Kimi Records started operating a sub-label, Brak Records, for more obscure Icelandic music. In its first year of operation it released one album a month. Paul Oscar
Páll Óskar Hjálmtýsson (born 16 March 1970), known internationally as Páll Óskar and Paul Oscar, is an Icelandic pop singer, songwriter and disc jockey. He had a musical childhood, singing at private functions, with choirs and for media advertisements, but was affected by bullying in school and tension between his parents at home. He came out as gay to his family at the age of 16 years. Paul Oscar's musical range spans traditional Icelandic songs, ballads, love songs, disco, house and techno. He released his first album, ''Stuð'' (''Groove''), in 1993 while in New York City, and also sang with Icelandic groups Milljónamæringarnir (The Millionaires) and Casino while establishing a career as a solo artiste. His album of ballads, ''Palli'', was the best-selling Icelandic album of 1995. Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands (Iceland Symphony Orchestra) (ISO) is an Icelandic orchestra based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Its primary concert venue is the Harpa Concert Hall. The Iceland Symphony is an autonomous public institution under the auspices of the Icelandic Ministry of Education. Iceland Symphony Orchestra made its home in Háskólabíó (University Cinema) from 1961 to 2011, but moved into the new 1800-seat Harpa Concert Hall in spring 2011. The orchestra gives approximately sixty concerts each season. Per a 1982 law (changed in 2007), the Iceland Symphony's primary financial sources are the Icelandic treasury (82%) and the City of Reykjavik (18%). Indie Rock
Indie rock is a subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or " guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's large student population. Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. Latitude Festival
The Latitude Festival is an annual music festival that takes place in Henham Park, near Southwold, Suffolk, England. It was first held in July 2006 and has been held every year since, apart from 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the festival went ahead as part of the government's live event pilot scheme, and was the UK's first full-capacity festival since 2019. The festival presents musicians, bands and artists across four stages - the Obelisk Arena, the BBC Sounds Stage, the Sunrise Arena and the Alcove. The festival also includes theatre, art, comedy, cabaret, poetry, politics, dance and literature. The Sziget Festival ( hu, Sziget Fesztivál, ; "Sziget" for "Island") is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe. It is held every August in northern Budapest, Hungary, on Óbudai-sziget ("Old Buda Island"), a leafy 108-hectare (266-acre) island on the Danube. More than 1,000 performances take place each year. The week-long festival has grown from a relatively low-profile student event in 1993 to become one of the prominent European rock festivals, with about half of all visitors coming from outside Hungary, especially from Western Europe. Katla (TV Series)
''Katla'' (stylized as ''KATLA'') is an Icelandic mystery-drama television series created by Baltasar Kormákur and Sigurjón Kjartansson. The show premiered on 17 June 2021 on Netflix. Synopsis A year after an eruption of the Katla volcano began, only a few people remain in the nearby town of Vík, persisting despite choking ash. An ash-caked woman who apparently disappeared twenty years earlier appears in the village, looking as she did back then. More ash-caked people who died in the past arrive in Vík, creating a paradox for those who knew them and reviving legends of "changelings".
