Historic Irvington Halloween Festival
The Historic Irvington Halloween Festival is a non-profit event founded in 1947 by the Historic Irvington Community Council in an effort to bring together residents, neighborhood organizations, and businesses in the Irvington Historic District of Indianapolis, Indiana for a celebration of heritage and community. The festival is currently the nation's second oldest and largest Halloween festival. The festival encompasses the week leading up to October 31, culminating in a street festival on the final Saturday. East Washington Street is closed between Ritter Avenue and Arlington Avenue in Irvington to hold the street festival. Events include a 5-mile run, a pageant, musicians, contests, Halloween-themed movies, ghost tours, live theater, a "haunted" puppet show, and many other events. Thomas Carr Howe Community High School
Thomas Carr Howe Community High School was a secondary school in Indianapolis that served grades 7–12. It was operated by Charter Schools USA. IPS Indianapolis Public Schools has plans to reopen Howe as a middle school in the 2024-25 school year. History Thomas Carr Howe High School (Indianapolis public school #420) broke ground in 1937. It was originally known as Irvington High School and was meant to serve the Irvington and surrounding areas on the eastside of Indianapolis. The first classes were in 1938. The school closed down in 1995. Howe reopened in 2000 as a community high school serving grades 6-12 school. Howe was eventually re-closed again in 2020. Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 – November 28, 1859) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and " The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his collection ''The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.'' His historical works include biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad and George Washington, as well as several histories of 15th-century Spain that deal with subjects such as Alhambra, Christopher Columbus and the Moors. Garfield Park (Indianapolis)
Garfield Park is a regional city park in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Established in the late 19th century, it is the oldest city park in Indianapolis and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is located at the confluence of Pleasant Run and Bean Creeks on the near Southside of Indianapolis. The Conservatory and Sunken Gardens are located in the eastern portion of the park. The noted landscape architect George Edward Kessler designed the Sunken Gardens along with many of the other features of the park as part of his Park and Boulevard Plan for the city. Pleasant Run Trail
The Pleasant Run Greenway, also known as the Pleasant Run Trail, is a shared-use path in Indianapolis, Indiana. It runs for from Ellenberger Park, through Christian Park, to Garfield Park. It follows the general course of Pleasant Run Creek as it flows to the south and west. Most of the greenway is located within the parkway on one side or the other of the creek; the parkway itself is part of the historic Indianapolis Park and Boulevard System. In several places, the greenway is routed on sidewalks of city streets due to existing structures and facilities that make the parkway itself discontinuous.
