Hiram R. Burton
Hiram Rodney Burton (November 13, 1841 – June 17, 1927) was an American physician and politician from Lewes, in Sussex County, Delaware. A member of the Republican Party, Burton served two terms as Delaware's at-large U.S. Representative from 1905 to 1909. Early life and family Burton was born in Lewes, Delaware. His mother was Ruth Hunn Rodney. He attended St. Peter's Academy at Lewes, taught for two years in the schools in Sussex County, and engaged in the dry goods business in Washington, D.C., from 1862 until 1865. Burton graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1868 and practiced medicine in Frankford, Delaware, from 1868 until 1872, when he moved back to Lewes. Progressive Party (United States, 1912)
The Progressive Party was a third party in the United States formed in 1912 by former president Theodore Roosevelt after he lost the presidential nomination of the Republican Party to his former protégé rival, incumbent president William Howard Taft. The new party was known for taking advanced positions on progressive reforms and attracting leading national reformers. The party was also ideologically deeply connected with America's indigenous radical-liberal tradition. After the party's defeat in the 1912 presidential election, it went into rapid decline in elections until 1918, disappearing by 1920. The Delaware Historical Society began in 1864 as an effort to preserve documents from the Civil War. Franklin Brockson, (August 6, 1865 – March 16, 1942) was an American lawyer and politician from Wilmington in New Castle County, Delaware. He was a member of the Democratic Party, who served in the Delaware General Assembly and as U. S. Representative from Delaware. Early life and family Brockson was born in Blackbird Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. He graduated from the Wilmington Conference Academy at Dover in 1890. Professional and political career Brockson began his career as a teacher and principal in the public schools at Port Penn and Marshallton, Delaware. The 1912 United States House of Representatives elections were held, coinciding with the election of President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson's victory was partly due to the division of the opposition Republican Party into conservative and progressive factions. While many progressives stayed within the party framework, they maintained lukewarm relationships with Republican leadership.
