Hippopotamus
The hippopotamus ( ; : hippopotamuses or hippopotami; ''Hippopotamus amphibius''), also called the hippo, common hippopotamus, or river hippopotamus, is a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus (''Choeropsis liberiensis'' or ''Hexaprotodon liberiensis''). Its name comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse" (). Aside from elephants and rhinos, the hippopotamus is the largest land mammal. It is also the largest extant land artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, the closest living relatives of the hippopotamids are cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc.), from which they diverged about 55 million years ago. Hippos are recognisable for their barrel-shaped torsos, wide-opening mouths with large canine tusks, nearly hairless bodies, pillar-like legs, and large size: adults average ...

It arrived after the Messinian salinity crisisHunt, Christopher O., Schembri, Patrick J.Quaternary Environments and Biogeography of the Maltese Islands, page 31, access in 13/03/2016 and lived during the Pleistocene. The absence of predators, and limited food supplies led to the dwarfing of the hippos. The majority of findings of this species are from Għar Dalam, a cave on Malta famous for its Pleistocene fossil deposits. Hippopotamus Gorgops
''Hippopotamus gorgops'' is an extinct species of hippopotamus. It first appeared in Africa during the late Pliocene, and eventually migrated into Europe (where its fossils were first discovered) during the early Pleistocene. It became extinct during the Middle Pleistocene. Fossil records found at Ubeidiya, Israel suggested that they migrated out of Africa around 1.6 million years ago. Some have speculated that ''H. gorgops'' and '' H. behemoth'' are actually the same species given their similar sizes and where they have been found. Taxonomy With an estimated length of , a shoulder height of , and a weight of 3,900-4,500 kg (8,600-9,900 lb), ''H. gorgops'' was larger than its living relative, ''H. amphibius''. Another feature setting it apart from ''H. amphibius'' was the placement of its eyes. Modern hippos have eyes placed high on the skull The skull is a bone protective cavity for the brain. The skull is composed of four types of bone i.e., cranial bones, facial bones, ...

''Hippopopotamus'' colonized Crete probably 800,000 years ago and lived there during the Middle Pleistocene. Bones of ''H. creutzburgi'' were found by Dorothea Bate on the Katharo plateau, in eastern Crete, in the 1900s.Bate, D.M.A., (1905): I. Hippopotamus Antiquus
''Hippopotamus antiquus'', sometimes called the European hippopotamus, is an extinct species of ''Hippopotamus'' that ranged across Europe during the Early and Middle Pleistocene. Chronology In Italy, the first appearance of the taxon is during the late Early Pleistocene, around 1.2 Ma, remains from Coste San Giacomo, suggested to date to around 2 Ma, have an uncertain stratigraphic context. ''H. antiquus'' first became widespread north of the Alps around 1.1 to 1 million years ago. The youngest confirmed remains of the taxon date to MIS 15, (621–563,000 years ago), but there are possibly later records dating to MIS 11 (424,000 to 374,000 years ago). Later records of ''Hippopotamus'' in continental Europe beginning in MIS 13 (~524,000-474,000 years ago), are believed to belong to the modern hippopotamus (''Hippopotamus amphibius''). Biology ''H. antiquus'' ranged from the Iberian Peninsula to the British Isles to the Rhine River to Greece."150 Years of Neanderthal Discover ...

Hippopotamus (album)
''Hippopotamus'' is the 23rd studio album by American rock group Sparks. It was released on September 8, 2017, through BMG Rights Management and The End Records, their first record issued on a major label for decades. Following the 2009 radio musical '' The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman'' and Sparks' subsequent collaboration with Franz Ferdinand in FFS, the release of ''Hippopotamus'' marked a return to the traditional Sparks format of "short, literate, witty pop songs", mixing elements from the band's various stylistic periods. ''Hippopotamus'' was met with critical acclaim, and entered the UK Albums Chart at no. 7, Sparks' first UK top-ten appearance in over 40 years. Background and recording Having spent much of the past decade working on two musicals, radio production ''The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman'' and the movie musical ''Annette'', a collaboration with French director Leos Carax, the Mael brothers set out to return to a more traditional song-oriented, rather than nar ...

Hippopotamus Defence
The Hippopotamus Defence refers to various irregular chess openings in which Black moves a number of pawns to the sixth , often developing pieces to the seventh rank, and does not move any pawns to the fifth rank in the opening. As an , it can also be utilized (albeit much less frequently) by White. Evaluation Chess master and author Fred Reinfeld once stated of it that "any expert player would dismiss Black's position as lost." Grandmaster Reuben Fine, one of the world's strongest players in the 1930s and 1940s, instructing his readers how to deal with such "Irregular Openings", wrote that "once a plus in development or center is set up, a well-conducted attack will decide." Reinfeld, who died in 1964, might have been surprised to see Black employing the same system of development successfully in the 1966 world championship match. There, Boris Spassky employed the same set-up, dubbed the "Hippopotamus" by commentators, in the 12th and 16th match games against World Champion T ...
