Hip House
Hip house, also known as rap house or house rap, is a musical genre that mixes elements of house music and hip hop, that originated in both London, United Kingdom and Chicago, United States in the mid to late 1980s. British group the Beatmasters' "Rok da House" is known to be the very first hip house record, having been written and pressed to vinyl in August 1986. Other early hip house records by British artists include " Pump Up the Volume" by MARRS and "Beat Dis" by Bomb the Bass, both from 1987. History Minor controversy ensued in 1988 when a U.S. record called "Turn Up the Bass" by Tyree featuring Kool Rock Steady claimed it was the "first hip house record on vinyl". The Beatmasters disputed this, pointing out that "Rok da House" had originally been written and pressed to vinyl in 1986. House is a music genre characterized by a repetitive Four on the floor (music), four-on-the-floor beat and a typical tempo of 120 beats per minute. It was created by Disc jockey, DJs and music producers from Chicago metropolitan area, Chicago's underground Clubbing (subculture), club culture in the late 1970s, as DJs began altering disco songs to give them a more mechanical beat. Jungle Brothers
Jungle Brothers are an American hip hop trio composed of Michael Small (Mike Gee), Nathaniel Hall (Afrika Baby Bam), and Sammy Burwell (DJ Sammy B). Known as the pioneers of the fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and house music, they were the first hip-hop group to collaborate with a house-music producer. MARRS (stylised M, A, R, R, S) were a 1987 recording collective formed by the groups A.R. Kane and Colourbox, which only released one commercial disc. It became "a one-hit wonder of rare influence" because of their international hit " Pump Up the Volume", which was their only single. History MARRS started in 1987 as an intended collaboration between the groups A.R. Kane and Colourbox, with additional input from DJs Chris "C.J." Mackintosh and Dave Dorrell. However, instead of working together, the two groups ended up recording a track each, then turning it over to the other for additional input. Of the two pieces completed, one, "Anitina", was an A.R. S-Express
S'Express (pronounced ''ess-express''; sometimes spelled S'Xpress or S-Express) were a British dance music act from the late 1980s, who had one of the earliest commercial successes in the acid house genre. "Theme from S'Express", which contained elements from Rose Royce's "Is It Love You're After", was one of the earliest recordings to capitalize on the emergence of sampling culture. Lazy scored a number of hip house hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, including three #1s: " Let It Roll", "Let the Rhythm Pump", and "H.O.U.S.E.". Deskee is the stage name for Derrick Crumpley, a German-American house music artist. Biography Early life He moved to Germany in 1984 with his mother, who was a member of the Armed Forces. Musical career Deskee became the main DJ for the road show called The Body Snatchers Road Show (members: Tillman, Williams, and Crumpley), and they played in several night clubs throughout Germany. Deskee shopped at the Frankfurt record shop, Boy Records, during the late 1980s to mid 1990s, and was approached by the shop owners A. Shepanski and N. Jordan, who informed him of a compilation album they were about to release on their new independent record label, Black-Out. Deskee teamed up with local DJ and record producer H. Peter van den Bosch (born 2 October 1971), better known as Tony Scott, is a Dutch rapper and musician of Surinamese descent. He became internationally known for his hip house music. Biography Tony Scott is a Kalina Amerindian who was born in Suriname. He immigrated with his parents to Amsterdam, Netherlands at a young age. As a thirteen-year-old, he became a member of an electric boogie crew, followed by joining the beatboxing group 2-Tuff E-nuff. After he had rapped in a jingle for the radio station where his brother was working, the 16-year-old Scott was offered a contract by the owner of the Dutch record label Rhythm.
