Hilwie Hamdon
Hilwie Jomha Hamdon (1905 - 1988) was a Muslim woman from Edmonton, Alberta, who organized support and funding to build the first mosque in Canada, the Al-Rashid Mosque. She was born in current day Lebanon in 1905. Not much is known about her early life. She married Ali Hamdon who had immigrated to Canada 1901, and together they settled in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, where Ali Hamdon had established a successful fur trading business. After their children were born, they moved to Edmonton, which was a much larger city with well-established schools. Hilwie Hamdon had six children: Evelyn, Lavida, Moneer, Sidney, Helen and Lewis. By 1931, there were nearly 700 muslims living in Canada, many coming from the region of Syria and Lebanon, which was going through upheaval after the fall of the Ottoman empire. Alberta

Al-Rashid Mosque
The Al-Rashid Mosque was the first mosque built in Canada. It was constructed in Edmonton, Alberta. History Al-Rashid Mosque was expected to be the first mosque in North America but was built in 1938 just after the Mother Mosque of America in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and several years after the 1929 mosque built in Ross, North Dakota. At the time, there were about 700 Muslims in Canada. Hilwie Hamdon was the first woman to talk to Edmonton Mayor John Fry about purchasing land to construct the mosque. She, along with friends, collected fund from Jews, Christians and Muslims to construct the mosque. The mosque was built by Ukrainian-Canadian contractor Mike Drewoth in a style resembling the Eastern Christian (Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox) immigrant churches and opened on December 12, 1938. Fort Chipewyan , commonly referred to as Fort Chip, is a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada, within the Regional Municipality (RM) of Wood Buffalo. It is located on the western tip of Lake Athabasca, adjacent to Wood Buffalo National Park, approximately north of Fort McMurray. History Fort Chipewyan is one of the oldest European settlements in the Province of Alberta. It was established as a trading post by Peter Pond of the North West Company in 1788. Ross, North Dakota
Ross is a city in Mountrail County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 95 at the 2020 census. History Ross was founded in 1902. It was the site of the first structure built in the United States specifically intended to serve as a mosque. Established in 1929, the mosque fell into disrepair and was dismantled. In 2005, the edifice was rebuilt by the family of one of the last remaining Muslims in the area. The community that built the mosque were Syrian- Lebanese immigrants who settled the region starting in the late 19th century to take advantage of the Homestead Act.
