Jack Hoxie
John Hartford Hoxie (January 11, 1885 – March 28, 1965) was an American rodeo performer and motion-picture actor whose career was most prominent in the silent film era of the 1910s through the 1930s. Hoxie is best recalled for his roles in Western (genre), Westerns and rarely strayed from the genre. Early life Born in Kingfisher Creek in Indian Territory (now the state of Oklahoma), Hoxie was the son of a veterinarian father, Bart "Doc" Hoxie, who was killed in a horse accident just weeks before Jack's birth, and a half–Nez Perce tribe, Nez Perce mother (some reports list her as Cherokee), Matilda E. Hoxie (''née'' Quick). After his father's death, his mother and he moved to northern Idaho where, at an early age, Hoxie became a working cowboy and ranch hand. Wilbur McGaugh (March 12, 1895–January 31, 1965) was an American film actor of the silent era, appearing mostly in westerns. He also directed five films. He also worked extensively as an assistant director in film and television. McGaugh's career changed with the coming of sound films. Described as "sadly inept in front of the microphones", he began working off-camer and became an assistant director for films in the 1930s and 1940s. Evelyn Nelson (November 13, 1899 – June 16, 1923) was an American silent film actress whose career encompassed 12 films over three years. Biography Nelson was born in Chloride, Arizona, to William Henry and Georgia P. Nelson. Her sister, Pauline D. Nelson, was a year older. Nelson's brief film career began with a 1920 comedy short called ''Springtime''. The actress played the role of the daughter to ''The Commissioner'', who was portrayed by Oliver Hardy. Her screen credits number only fifteen. Nelson was last seen in the western ''Desert Rider'' (1923) in the role of Carolyn Grey. She worked for Century, Christie, Fox, and Hal Roach studios. Nine of her films had her cast as leading lady in Westerns that starred Jack Hoxie. Nelson fell in love with actor Wallace Reid, who was married, and he chose to remain with his wife rather than have a relationship with Nelson. Early life and career Born in San Rafael, California into a family that was allegedly descended from one of the earliest Spanish families to settle in California, Marin Sais began her acting career as a teenager after travelling to New York City where she appeared in vaudeville. In 1910, at the age of twenty, Sais made her screen debut for New York City's Vitagraph Studios in the short film adaptation of William Shakespeare's ''Twelfth Night'' opposite the notable actors Florence Turner and Julia Swayne Gordon.
