Highwood, Hamden
Highwood is a neighborhood in the south-central portion of the town of Hamden, Connecticut. It is primarily residential, with a mixture of small apartment buildings and single-family, two- and three-family homes. Commercial development is concentrated on its principal street, Dixwell Avenue. Immigrants from Germany were the first to settle the area extensively in the 1860s, followed by others from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe later in the nineteenth century. Today it is predominantly African American. There are no officially established boundaries for the neighborhood. One map has it bounded on the north by Helen Street and Putnam Avenue, on the east by Newhall Street, on the south by the New Haven city line, and on the west by Fitch Street and Fairview Avenue. The census tract with GEOID 09009165500, corresponding closely to these boundaries, had a population of 4,959, as of the 2010 census. Several other names have been given to the neighborhood. Newhallville is a neighborhood in the city of New Haven, Connecticut, named for industrialist George Newhall. As delineated on city planning maps, Newhallville is bordered on the north by the town of Hamden, on the east by Winchester Avenue, on the south by Munson Street, on the southwest by Crescent Street, and on the northwest by Fournier Street. East Coast Greenway
The East Coast Greenway is a pedestrian and bicycle route between Maine and Florida along the East Coast of the United States. In 2020, the Greenway received over 50 million visits. The nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance was created in 1991. Its goal is for the entire route to use off-road, shared-use paths; , over of the route (35%) meets this criteria. Farmington Canal Heritage Trail
The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail is an multi-use rail trail located in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The trail was built on former New Haven and Northampton Company (NH&N) (later New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad H railbed, which was constructed along the route of the Farmington Canal in Connecticut and the Hampshire and Hampden Canal in Massachusetts, respectively. The sections from New Haven to Tariffville totaling are part of the East Coast Greenway, a 32 percent completed trail intended to link Maine with Florida. Winchester Repeating Arms Company
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was a prominent American manufacturer of repeating firearms and ammunition. The firm was established in 1866 by Oliver Winchester and was located in New Haven, Connecticut. 1989 Northeastern United States Tornado Outbreak
A destructive series of tornadoes in damage struck the Northeastern United States on July 10, 1989. The storm system affected five states with severe weather, including hail up to across, thunderstorm winds up to , and 17 tornadoes. Several towns in New York and Connecticut were particularly hard-hit. Several homes were leveled in Schoharie, New York and extensive damage occurred in Bantam, Connecticut. A large section of Hamden, Connecticut, including an industrial park and hundreds of homes, was destroyed; and in some places, buildings were flattened to the ground. More than 150 people were injured by the tornado outbreak, and one person was killed by straight-line thunderstorm winds.
