The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center is a heritage center and science center located in Ashland, Kentucky, United States. The museum displays exhibits on local history and specialized science displays for children along with providing educational outreach programs. History The Kentucky Highlands Museum and Discovery Center was established in 1984 in Ashland's historic Mayo Mansion as the Kentucky Highlands Museum. By 1994, additional space was needed and the museum was moved to the former C.H. Parsons Department Store Building in Ashland's Commercial Historic District. Ashland Bus System
Ashland Bus System (ABS) provides the municipal bus service in the City of Ashland, Kentucky and its nearby suburbs. Unlike many such services, it is operated by the city government itself. Its routes also reach the suburbs, including Ceredo, West Virginia and Kenova, West Virginia. This is a result of a dispute between those twin cities, and the West Virginia and Ohio bus system known as the Tri-State Transit Authority, known as TTA. All buses center on Ashland Transportation Center, which is also used by the Greyhound system as well as Amtrak. The service provides interchange between itself and TTA via a TTA bus that travels from Ironton, Ohio across the bridge into Ashland and the Ashland Transportation Center. It however does not interchange with TTA in West Virginia, even though the buses pass within a few blocks of one another. Mayo Mansion (Ashland, Kentucky)
Mayo Mansion, also known as Fetter Mansion, is a historic mansion located in the Bath Avenue Historic District in downtown Ashland, Kentucky. History Following the death of her husband, John C. C. Mayo, Alice Jane Mayo moved to Florida. In 1916, she met Dr. Samuel P. Fetter of Portsmouth, Ohio, while he was recovering from an illness at Palm Beach, Florida. They married the following year and purchased the Victorian Gartrell-Hager House in Ashland, Kentucky, which was built in 1864. Although Mayo wanted to build a new house, she could not due to rations set in place during World War I. In order to avoid being arrested for building a new home, she received permission to remodel the existing house. Using the wealth amassed from the Mayo Companies, she rebuilt the entire building, transforming it into a Beaux-Arts mansion. The Eastern Kentucky Coalfield is part of the Central Appalachian bituminous coalfield, including all or parts of 30 Kentucky counties and adjoining areas in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee.
