High Sheriff Of Brecknockshire
This is a list of High Sheriffs of Brecknockshire or Breconshire. The office of High Sheriff of Brecknockshire was established in 1535 since when a High Sheriff was appointed annually by the Queen until 1974 when the office was merged into that of High Sheriff of Powys as part of the creation of Powys from the amalgamation of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. The Office of High Sheriff remained first in precedence in the County until the reign of Edward VII when an Order in Council in 1908 gave the Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire the prime Office under the Crown as the Sovereign's personal representative. Rowland Gwynne
Rowland Gwynne FRS (c. 1658 – 24 January 1726) of Llanelwedd, Radnorshire, was a Welsh Whig politician. Gwynne was born in about 1658, the eldest son of George Gwynne of Llanelwedd, by his wife Sybill, daughter of Roderick Gwynne, also of Llanelwedd. He succeeded to his father's estates in about 1673: at the time he was a very rich young man, but was later to waste his inheritance. He matriculated at St John's College, Oxford in 1674 aged 15, and was a law student at Gray's Inn in 1679. He was in royal service to Charles II as Gentleman of the Privy Chamber from 1671 to 1683 and was knighted by the king in 1680. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1681. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Radnorshire in March 1679, October 1679, 1681, and 1689, for Breconshire in 1690, 1698, February 1702 and December 1701, and for Bere Alston in 1695. John Lewis (of Coed Mawr)
John Robert Lewis (February 21, 1940 – July 17, 2020) was an American politician and civil rights activist who served in the United States House of Representatives for from 1987 until his death in 2020. He participated in the 1960 Nashville sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966, and was one of the " Big Six" leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. Fulfilling many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States, in 1965 Lewis led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge where, in an incident which became known as Bloody Sunday, state troopers and police attacked Lewis and the other marchers. Glyntawe
Glyntawe is a hamlet and parish on the upper reaches of the River Tawe in Powys, Wales, in the community of Tawe-Uchaf. It has always been sparsely populated. Today it attracts tourists for outdoor activities in the Brecon Beacons National Park and for caving. Abercraf
Abercraf ( en, Abercrave) is a village within the historic boundaries of the county of Brecknockshire, Wales, administered as part of the unitary authority of Powys, and in the community of Ystradgynlais. Between 1965 and 1991, the village was the location of a Royal Observer Corps monitoring bunker, to be used in the event of a nuclear attack. It remains mostly intact. Henry Williams (MP For Radnorshire)
Henry Williams was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1654 and 1659. Williams was the son of Robert Williams of Caehalfa and probably the grandson of Sir David Williams of Gwernyfed. He was High Sheriff of Breconshire in 1639 and High Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1649. In 1654, Williams was elected Member of Parliament for Radnorshire for the First Protectorate Parliament. Sir William Lewis, 1st Baronet
Sir William Lewis, 1st Baronet (26 March 1598 – November 1677) of Llangorse, Brecon and Bordean House, East Meon, Hampshire, supported the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War. He sat in the House of Commons variously between 1640 and 1677. Biography Lewis was the son of Lodowick Lewis of Trewalter, and his wife, a daughter of William Watkins of Llangorse. He was created Baronet of Llangorse on 14 September 1628 and was High Sheriff of Breconshire for 1619 and 1636. In April 1640, Lewis was elected Member of Parliament for Petersfield in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Petersfield in November 1640 for the Long Parliament, where he sat until he was excluded under Pride's Purge. He was Parliamentary Governor of Portsmouth for 1642–43. Llangattock
Llangattock ( cy, Llangatwg) is a village, community and electoral ward in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys, Wales. It lies in the Usk Valley just across the river from the town of Crickhowell. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal passes through the village en route between Brecon and Pontypool. It is in the historic county of Breconshire. According to the 2011 UK Census the population of the community was 999, with the village itself having a population of around 660. To the south of the village is the imposing Llangattock Escarpment whose great limestone cliffs were scarred by extensive quarrying in the nineteenth century. Above these is the great gritstone plateau of Mynydd Llangatwg or Llangattock Mountain. Henry Williams (died 1636)
Sir Henry Williams (c. 1579–1636) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1601 and 1624. Williams was the eldest son of David Williams, the judge, of Gwernyfed and his first wife. He was probably educated at Shrewsbury School in 1589 and was admitted at St John's College, Oxford on 16 April 1594, aged 15. He entered Middle Temple in 1594. In 1601, he was elected Member of Parliament for Brecon. He was knighted on 23 July 1603. In 1604 he was re-elected MP for Brecon. He succeeded to the Welsh estates of his father at Gwernyfed, Aberllyfni in 1613 and was appointed High Sheriff of Breconshire for 1614–15. Hugh Powell (died 1587) was an English politician. He was the son of John or Howell Powell of Breconshire and educated at Oxford University (1559) He was the Registrar for the Salisbury diocese from 1562 to 1584. He was appointed High Sheriff of Breconshire for 1582–83.
