High Hazels Colliery
High Hazels Colliery was a coal mine situated between the parish of Catcliffe, near Rotherham, and the parish of Handsworth, near Sheffield. It was adjacent to the main line of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway between the stations of Darnall and Woodhouse. The original colliery was owned by Thomas Coupland Hounsfield, a merchant who, until 1900, lived in Paris. In that year he leased the colliery to the Waverley Coal Company, who were already working Nunnery Colliery nearer to the city centre. The pit was small, with, in 1896, only 123 workers. High Hazels No.3 pit was the easternmost colliery of the Waverley group and situated slightly to the east of the other shafts. In 1947, on nationalisation, the colliery became part of the National Coal Board. Catcliffe
Catcliffe is a village and civil parish on the north-west bank of the River Rother in South Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,108. It is in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, approximately south of the town of Rotherham and east of Sheffield City Centre. History Catcliffe is mentioned in the ''Domesday book'', its name is presumed to mean either ''the cliff where the cats live'', or ''steep river bank''. In 1740 William Fenney established a glassworks here. The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR) was formed in 1847 when the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway joined with authorised but unbuilt railway companies, forming a proposed network from Manchester to Grimsby. Darnall Railway Station
Darnall railway station is on the Sheffield to Lincoln Line and was built in 1849 to serve Darnall, a community about from the centre of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, and which later became a suburb of the city. As of March 2020, Darnall is the least used railway station in the county of South Yorkshire. Nunnery Colliery
Nunnery Colliery was a coal mine close to Sheffield at Darnall, South Yorkshire. The mining company, known as The Waverley Coal Company, also worked High Hazels Colliery about 3 miles (5 km) further east. History Mining started on the Nunnery site in 1868 and it is claimed that its coal supplied half the houses in Sheffield. The colliery was nationalised in 1947 becoming part of the National Coal Board and closed in August 1953, its reserves said to be exhausted. The Nunnery "Paddy Mail" accident On 3 December 1923 an accident was caused by the breaking of a rope hauling an underground Paddy Mail train, carrying 90 men and 30 boys. The National Coal Board (NCB) was the statutory corporation created to run the nationalised coal mining industry in the United Kingdom. Yorkshire Engine Company
The Yorkshire Engine Company (YEC) was a small independent locomotive manufacturer in Sheffield, England. The company was formed in 1865 and produced locomotives and carried out general engineering work until 1965. It mainly built shunting engines for the British market, but also built main line engines for overseas customers. Black, Hawthorn and Company was a steam locomotive manufacturer with a works situated in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, UK. John Coulthard and Son The Quarry Field Works was opened in 1835 by John and Ralph Coulthard, known as John Coulthard and Son which became R.
