Hexedene were an English electro-industrial group comprising vocalist Katie Helsby and guitarists Ian Palmer and Jonathan Sharp. They were recognized for fusing techno and industrial with leading female vocals. Helsby and Palmer signed their project Streem to a large record label after recording sessions finished for Hexedene's first album and as a result departed to leave Sharp as the sole member. The band released two albums: ''Choking on Lilies'' in 1997 and '' Bullet Proof Diva's'' in 2001. History Hexedene was conceived in 1997 by composer Jonathan Sharp as a side project to his band New Mind. In order to produce the music Jonathan Sharp wrote completed songs between 1995 and 1997 that he sent on tape to Katie Helsby and Ian Palmer to layer vocals and guitars. ''Choking on Lilies'' is the debut studio album of Hexedene, released in 1997 by Matrix Cube. The album was re-issued in 1998 with an expanded and rearranged track listing by Re-Constriction Records. Reception Scott Hefflon of ''Lollipop Magazine'' gave ''Choking on Lilies'' a positive review, saying "a nice break from all the boring electro" and "a band like this that carries off the aloof aggression of electro, rocking out, and sweet, ethereal vocals is quite a find." Despite criticizing the overabundance of remixes, ''Sonic Boom'' also gave the album a positive write-up, saying that " Katie had a very strong vocal range that could be very lush on slower tracks like 'Everything and Nothing' or more aggressive such as on 'Only Human'. Ian's guitar work was always complimentary, never dominating or hiding in the final mixdown. These elements combined with Jonathan's obvious electronic wizardry was bordering on perfection." Jonathan Sharp (musician)
Jonathan Sharp is an electronic body music / industrial musician and professional sound designer from Cumbria, England, who has released music under the names New Mind, Bio-Tek, The Heartwood Institute, and others. He was also a member of the bands Cyber-Tec Project, Hexedene, and Hyperdex-1-Sect. Career Early life As a child Jonathan was a classically-trained musician, having played piano and violin. As a teenager taught himself to play guitar and his interests began drifting from classical music towards experimental guitar oriented music in the vein of Swans, as well as early industrial and electronic music including Neu! and Helden. Drawing on a fascination with the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Jonathan eventually acquired a Roland synthesizer in order to make sounds of his own. Re-Constriction Records was a division of Cargo Music based in California. The label was founded in 1992 and headed by Chase, who was previously the Music Director at KCR, a student radio station on the campus of San Diego State University. They specialized in releasing bands belonging to the industrial, aggrotech and EBM genres. After the label folded, Chase went to work for Access Communications where he worked for 14 years doing video game-related public relations, including helping to launch Twitch in 2011. In May 2013, he took a staff job at Twitch overseeing all of their PR efforts. In 2019, he left Twitch and shortly thereafter joined StreamElements. Waiting for God was a Canadian goth-industrial band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, who recorded from 1994 to 1997. The band consisted of Daemon Cadman, Martin Myers, Greg Price and Steven Fairweather; lead singer Cadman's lyrics were often about her murdered brother, Jesse Cadman. Maryport is a town and civil parish in the Allerdale borough of Cumbria, England, historically in Cumberland. The town is situated just outside the Lake District National Park, at the northern end of the former Cumberland Coalfield.
