Hermes F.C. (England)
Hermes Football Club was a football club based in Beddington, England. History Founded in 1932 as a works team for the London Telephone Region, the club entered the London League under the name Post Office Engineers from 1932 to 1950. Under the Post Office Engineers name, the club entered the FA Cup in 1946 and competed in the Surrey Senior League and the Parthenon League between 1955 and 1959 and 1960 to 1962 respectively. After also competing under the name Post Office Telecoms, the club changed their name to Hermes, playing in the London League and becoming founder members of the Greater London League. Beddington
Beddington is a suburban settlement in the London Borough of Sutton on the boundary with the London Borough of Croydon. Beddington is formed from a village of the same name which until early the 20th century still included land which became termed entirely as Wallington. The latter was in the 13th century shown on local maps as Hakebrug, and named after a bridge on the River Wandle. The locality has a landscaped wooded park at Beddington Park – also known as Carew Manor; and a nature reserve and sewage treatment works in the centre and to the north of its area respectively. The population of Beddington according to the 2011 census is 21,044. Beddington forms part of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency, which is represented in Westminster by Conservative Elliot Colburn. The London Telephone Region was an administrative unit of Post Office Telephones in Britain formed in 1936. It comprised all of the London Telephone Area (the area covered by the 01 telephone area code at the time) plus the charging groups adjacent, for example: the Romford Charge Group, comprising Hornchurch, Ingrebourne, Purfleet, Rainham, Romford, South Ockendon, Stapleford and Upminster telephone exchange areas. London League (football)
The London League was a football competition that was held in the London and surrounding areas of south-east England from 1896 until 1964. In 1896 the president of the London League was Arnold Hills founder of Thames Ironworks F.C. (which later reformed as West Ham United). One of the men who helped draft the rules of the competition was Francis Payne, club secretary of Thames Ironworks F.C. in 1897. The league started with three divisions, the 3rd Grenadier Guards winning the inaugural championship. The league fluctuated between having a single division and reaching four divisions. Before World War I, most of the senior London Football League clubs fielded a reserve side in the London League. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the Women's FA Cup. Surrey Senior League
The Surrey Senior League was an English regional football league for teams based in Surrey although teams from outside the county were often admitted as well. The league existed from 1922 until 1978, when it was rebranded as the Home Counties League in an attempt to attract teams from a wider catchment area. After one season the league changed its name once again to the Combined Counties League, under which name it continues to operate. The Parthenon League was a football league covering Greater London and the surrounding area. The Greater London League was a football league for clubs in and around London. It was formed in 1964 by a merger of the London League and the Aetolian League, after the two leagues had run a joint league cup the previous season due to both struggling for numbers. History The league initially ran with A and B sections, before being divided into a Premier Division and First Division in 1965. In 1967 the divisions were renamed Division One and Division Two.
