Hermann Kesten Medal
The Hermann Kesten Prize (german: link=no, Hermann-Kesten-Preis), formally the Hermann Kesten Medal (german: link=no, Hermann-Kesten-Medaille), is a German literary award presented annually for outstanding efforts in support of persecuted writers, on behalf of PEN Centre Germany according to the principles of the Charter of International PEN. In 1985, the PEN Center of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded the first Hermann Kesten Medal. It is named in honor of the German novelist and dramatist Hermann Kesten (1900–1996). Until 1993, it was awarded every two years, since 1994 it has been given annually. As of 2000, the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts has endowed the award with a prize of . The award is one of many PEN awards sponsored by International PEN affiliates in over 145 PEN centres around the world. The Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts (german: Hessisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst) is a Ministry of Education and Culture, university and culture ministry in Hesse, Germany. Since January 2019, the minister has been Angela Dorn-Rancke. History The Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts was established on 4 July 1984 as a spin-off of the Hessian Ministry of Culture, Hessian Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Education was then responsible for school and part of the church affairs. Since 1987, the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts has been located in a rented, Gründerzeit office building between the ''Rheinstraße'' and ''Luisenstraße'' in Wiesbaden, which was used until 1975 as the Wiesbaden main post-office and was then rebuilt and renovated accordingly. Liu Xiaobo (; 28 December 1955 – 13 July 2017) was a Chinese writer, literary critic, human rights activist, philosopher and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who called for political reforms and was involved in campaigns to end communist one-party rule in China. He was arrested numerous times, and was described as China's most prominent dissident and the country's most famous political prisoner. Hrant Dink ( hy, Հրանդ Տինք; Western ; 15 September 1954 – 19 January 2007) was a Turkish-Armenian intellectual, editor-in-chief of ''Agos'', journalist and columnist. Jolanthe von Brandenstein (15 August 1925 – 4 February 2019), known by her pen name Leonie Ossowski, was a German writer. She also wrote under the name Jo Tiedemann. She wrote novels, including the novel for young adults ''Die große Flatter'' which was filmed as an award-winning TV play, screenplays such as for ''Zwei Mütter'', stories and non-fiction books. Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya (;, ; uk, Ганна Степанівна Політковська , 30 August 1958 – 7 October 2006) was a Russian journalist and human rights activist, who reported on political events in Russia, in particular, the Second Chechen War (1999–2005). It was her reporting from Chechnya that made Politkovskaya's national and international reputation. For seven years, she refused to give up reporting on the war despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence.
