Herbert Summers Lloyd
Herbert Summers Lloyd MBE (1 April 1887 – 26 January 1963) was an English dog breeder of show English Cocker Spaniels. He remains the most successful breeder/owner at Crufts, having won Best in Show on six occasions in the 1930s and 1940s. Early life Born on 1 April 1887, his father Richard Lloyd was a dog breeder considered to be one of the founding fathers of the English Cocker Spaniel. Once he left school, he became an apprentice to a printer; however after two years in the trade, he left to pursue his love for dogs. Cocker Spaniels In 1906, Lloyd adopted the "of Ware" kennel suffix, named after Ware, Hertfordshire where the original kennels were located. He and the "of Ware" kennels eventually moved to Swakeleys Farm, Ickenham, Middlesex. He won his first Best in Show at Crufts in 1930 with Luckystar of Ware. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Rickmansworth
Rickmansworth () is a town in southwest Hertfordshire, England, about northwest of central London and inside the perimeter of the M25 motorway. The town is mainly to the north of the Grand Union Canal (formerly the Grand Junction Canal) and the River Colne. The town of Watford is to the northeast. Rickmansworth is the administrative seat of the Three Rivers District Council. The confluence of the River Chess and the River Gade with the Colne in Rickmansworth inspired the district's name. The enlarged Colne flows south to form a major tributary of the River Thames. Maple Cross
Maple Cross is a village in Hertfordshire, England, which up until the Second World War consisted of an inn, a blacksmith's shop and a few cottages. Today there are around 800 postwar council houses. Some of these have been sold into private ownership. The area is close by junction 17 of the M25 motorway, which makes up the western boundary of the village. It lies on the western fringe of Rickmansworth, about west of Watford and 6 miles north of Uxbridge. Origin of the name Maple Cross is thought to be a contraction of Maypole Cross and the village was once a place where maypole dancing took place. The nearby village of Mill End is on record as having complained to the lord of the manor about the noise of the dancing in 1588. Canigou Cambrai
Ch. Canigou Cambrai, also known as Albert (1992–2008), an English Cocker Spaniel, is the most recent of his breed to win Best in Show at Crufts in 1996, the seventh occasion it was awarded to a Cocker Spaniel and the first time for forty six years. For a while he was the most successful black male Cocker Spaniel of all time in the UK, and his descendants continue to be multi-show winning champions around the world. Show history In November 1995, Albert won best in show and the dog challenge certificate (CC) at the Championship Show of the Devon and Cornwall Cocker Spaniel Club, beating Sh. Ch. The Kennel Club
The Kennel Club ("KC") is the official kennel club of the United Kingdom. It is the oldest recognised kennel club in the world. Its role is to oversee various canine activities including dog shows, dog agility and working trials. It also operates the national register of pedigree dogs in the United Kingdom and acts as a lobby group on issues involving dogs in the UK. Its headquarters are on Clarges Street in Mayfair, London, with business offices in Aylesbury. The Kennel Club registration system divides dogs into seven breed groups. The Kennel Club Groups are: Hound group, Working group, Terrier group, Gundog group, Pastoral group, Utility group and Toy group. As of 2021, The Kennel Club recognised 222 breeds of dog. Charles Cruft (showman)
Charles Alfred Cruft (28 June 1852 – 10 September 1938) was a British showman who founded the Crufts dog show. Charles first became involved with dogs when he began to work at Spratt's, a manufacturer of dog biscuits. He rose to the position of general manager, and whilst working for Spratt's in France he was invited to run his first dog show at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. After running dog shows in London for four years, he ran his first Cruft's dog show in 1891, and continued to run a further 45 shows until his death in 1938, as well as running two cat shows in 1894 and 1895. He was involved in a range of dog breed clubs, including that for Schipperkes, Pugs and Borzois. He and his wife upheld a story that they never owned a dog, and instead owned a cat, however Cruft admitted to owning at least one Saint Bernard in his memoirs, published posthumously. Tracey Witch Of Ware
Tracey Witch of Ware was a female English Cocker Spaniel who won the title of Best In Show at Cruft's in both 1948 and 1950. She missed out on the Best in Show judging in 1952 because of a delay in breed judging, and also became Reserve Best in Show in 1953. She was a descendant of a previous Cruft's Best in Show winner, Luckystar of Ware. Show career Tracey Witch was bred by Denise Weldon from the sire Falconers Padlock of Ware and the dam Whist. She was a descendant of the previous Cruft's Best in Show winner Luckystar of Ware and Reserve Best in Show winner Whoopee of Ware. Tracey Witch was subsequently purchased by H. S.
