Herbert Sohler
Herbert Sohler (25 July 1908, Attendorn, Westphalia – 22 June 1991) was a German U-boat commander during World War II. Career He commanded from 4 April to 31 July 1938. He then commanded from 2 November 1938 to 21 May 1940 for five patrols - he sank only two ships (''City of Mandalay'' in convoy HG-3 on 17 October 1939 and the Norwegian ship ''Rudolf'' on 21 December the same year) and so was replaced as ''U-46'' 's commander by Engelbert Endrass. Sohler had also been deputy commander of 7th U-boat Flotilla The 7th U-boat Flotilla (German ''7. Unterseebootsflottille''), also known as Wegener Flotilla, was the seventh operational U-boat combat unit in the Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine''. Attendorn
Attendorn () is a German town in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia. As of 2019 it had a population of 24,264. History The town's location was favoured by the good climate in the Attendorn-Elsper Limestone Double Basin (''Attendorn-Elsper-Kalkdoppelmulde''), the fruitful soil and favourable transport potential, and was already attracting people in prehistoric times. Heavier settlement, however, can be traced only as far back as the Middle Ages. The town lies at the crossroads of two former long-distance roads, the ''Heidenstraße'' (“Heath Road”) and the so-called ''Königsstraße'' (“King’s Road”). Here, in Charlemagne’s time, arose a parish. Engelbert Endrass (german: Engelbert Endraß) (2 March 1911 – 21 December 1941) was a German U-boat commander in World War II. He commanded the and the , being credited with sinking 22 ships on ten patrols, for a total of of Allied shipping, to purportedly become the 23rd highest claiming U-boat commander of World War II. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves of Nazi Germany. It was Germany's highest military decoration at the time of its presentation to Endrass. Early life and career Endrass began his naval career in April 1935. After some months on the cruiser and service on escort ships, he was assigned in October 1937 to the U-boat force. He joined in December 1938 as ''Leutnant zur See''. 7th U-boat Flotilla
The 7th U-boat Flotilla (German ''7. Unterseebootsflottille''), also known as Wegener Flotilla, was the seventh operational U-boat combat unit in the Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine''. Founded on 25 June 1938 under the command of ''Korvettenkapitän'' Werner Sobe, it was named in honour of ''Kapitänleutnant'' Bernd Wegener. Wegener, a U-boat commander during World War I, died on 19 August 1915 after his submarine ''U-27'' was sunk by British Q-ship HMS ''Baralong'', which was itself a much disputed battle with the Royal Navy accused of war crimes by the German Navy. The flotilla, under the name "Wegener Flotilla", was founded in Kiel in June 1938. In September 1940, the flotilla left its base in Kiel and moved to St. Nazaire in France.
