Herbert Smith (footballer, Born 1877)
Herbert Smith (22 November 1877 – 6 January 1951) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Derby County and Stoke. He also competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics, playing at left-back. Career He was born in Witney, Oxfordshire, and was a member of the English team, which won the gold medal in the football tournament. He had previously made four appearances for the full England team in 1905 and 1906. Smith played for a number of clubs including Reading and Oxford City as well as short spells with Football League clubs Stoke in 1902 and Derby County Derby County Football Club () is a professional association football club based in Derby, Derbyshire, England. Witney
Witney is a market town on the River Windrush in West Oxfordshire in the county of Oxfordshire, England. It is west of Oxford. The place-name "Witney" is derived from the Old English for "Witta's island". The earliest known record of it is as ''Wyttannige'' in a Saxon charter of 969. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as ''Witenie''. Notable buildings The Church of England parish church of St Mary the Virgin was originally Norman. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981.
