Herbert Power Stakes
The Herbert Power Stakes is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race held under quality handicap conditions, for horses aged three years old and older, over a distance of 2400 metres. It is held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia. Prizemoney is A$300,000. History The race was named after former Victoria Amateur Turf Club Chairman and thoroughbred owner Herbert Power (1833–1919), who was instrumental in the formation of the sport of racing in the early days of the Colony of Victoria. He joined the original Melbourne Club in 1859 and played an integral part in the merger in 1864 of the Victorian Turf Club and Victorian Jockey club to form today's Victoria Racing Club. In 1875, he was one of a band of racing enthusiasts who founded the Victoria Amateur Turf Club. He was a member of the VATC committee, and he was chairman in 1889, 1896 and 1907. Rising Fast (NZ)
Rising Fast (1949 - 1978) was a champion New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who is the only horse to complete the Spring Grand Slam, winning the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, and Cox Plate in 1954. He also won the 1955 Caulfield Cup and came second in the 1955 Melbourne Cup. Breeding Rising Fast was bred by brothers Frank and Bruce Robertson at their Platform Lodge farm at Greytown (New Zealand), Greytown in the Wairarapa. He was a bay or brown gelding by Alonzo (GB) and from the mare Faster, by Mr. Standfast. Alonzo was a poorly performed racehorse having only won one race on the flat and one over the hurdles in England. Faster was unplaced at her only two starts, but produced seven winners from ten foals. Wakeful (horse)
Wakeful was one of the great Thoroughbred mares of the Australian turf. She had shown her versatility by defeating top racehorses at distances from 5½ furlongs to 3 miles. She was unplaced in only three races. This bay filly was foaled in 1896, and was by the outstanding racehorse and sire, Trenton from Insomnia by Robinson Crusoe. Her pedigree contained mostly good old colonial bloodlines that had proved their worth in Australian racing and breeding. She was offered at the St Aubins stud dispersal sale in 1900 and purchased by Leslie Macdonald for the bargain price of 310 guineas. Racing record Wakeful did not commence racing until she was four because of shin soreness. At her third start she won the VATC Oakleigh Plate, followed that by winning the VRC Newmarket Handicap and then the AJC Doncaster Handicap in a race record time of 1:39.75. Comedy King (horse)
Comedy King (1907–1929) was a British bred thoroughbred racehorse that raced his entire career in Australia. He is most notable for winning the 1910 Melbourne Cup and becoming the first Northern-Hemisphere bred horse to do so. Background Comedy King was owned by Sol Green, one of Australia's biggest bookmakers and one of the country's richest men. On a trip to England in 1906 Green bought some racehorses and among them was the broodmare Tragedy Queen, which was in foal to the 1896 English Derby winner and legendary racehorse Persimmon. After the foal was weaned it was exported to Australia where it was to race for Green under the name Comedy King. Racing career Comedy King won eight races in his career, with his most famous victory being the 1910 Melbourne Cup. Eurythmic (horse)
Eurythmic (1916–1925) was a versatile Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who had the ability to produce a brilliant finishing run in staying races and he also won important sprint races, too. At four he won 12 of his 13 starts including the Caulfield Cup and Sydney Cup. When Eurythmic finished racing he was the greatest stake-winner in Australia. He was later inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Breeding He was bred by the young breeder, Noel Thompson at the Yarraman Stud, west of Scone, New South Wales. Van Der Hum
Van der Hum (31 July 1971 – 27 July 2001) was a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse, who won the 1976 Melbourne Cup when ridden by Bob Skelton. He was sired by the versatile stayer and sire of the winners of over $2m, Hermes (GB), his dam Tip O'Dawn was by the good sire Count Rendered (GB). Flat racing career In 1976 Van der Hum won 10 races in New Zealand over distances ranging from 1600m to 2200m. Heading to Australia he won the 2400m Herbert Power Handicap on 9 October 1976 from Demerara on a slow track. He then ran 3rd behind How Now in the Caulfield Cup on a heavy track, ridden by Brent Thomson. With Bob Skelton aboard he was then 8th, out of 14, behind the three-year-old New Zealand-bred filly Surround in the Cox Plate on a fast track. Arwon (foaled 8 September 1973, died 25 May 2007) was a New Zealand-bred thoroughbred racehorse by Aritzo from Fair Flash who won the 1978 Melbourne Cup. In New Zealand, he was known and raced as Flash Guy. Arwon won the 1978 Melbourne Cup, beating Dandeleith and Karu by a half neck. Rogan Josh (30 September 1992 − 24 June 2022) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse, who won the 1999 Melbourne Cup when ridden by John Marshall (jockey), John Marshall for the trainer Bart Cummings. Background information Rogan Josh was purchased for $13,000 by owner Wendy Green, after he didn't reach his reserve price at the yearling sales and began his racing career in Western Australia. His first start was at Bunbury, Western Australia, Bunbury as a four-year-old, and after winning 4 of his first 5 starts he headed to Ascot Racecourse, Western Australia, Ascot where his final run for the campaign resulted in a fourth placing. Master O'Reilly
Master O'Reilly (2002–2013) was a New Zealand bred race horse trained by Judy Mawer. He was the 2007 winner of the Caulfield Cup when ridden by Vlad Duric. In October 2007, Master O'Reilly was penalized 1.5 kg by Racing Victoria Limited prior to the Melbourne Cup, one of the highest penalties given in recent years. Although the penalty placed him 26th among a field of 24 horses, he was nevertheless guaranteed a start and went on to win the Caulfield Cup later that week. He was well supported in the Melbourne Cup, starting favourite, but he finished a disappointing eighth behind Efficient. Sea Moon
Sea Moon (foaled 6 March 2008) is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. He was initially trained in Britain and as a three-year-old in 2011 he won the Great Voltigeur Stakes, was runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Turf and finished third in the St Leger. In 2012 he won the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. In 2013 he was sold and sent to be trained in Australia where he won the Herbert Power Stakes. He returned to Europe for three races in 2015 before being retired to stud. Background Sea Moon is a bay horse with a white blaze and three white socks, bred by his owner, Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms. Sea Moon is the best horse to date sired by Beat Hollow whose wins included the Grand Prix de Paris and the Arlington Million. Poseidon (horse)
Poseidon (19 August 1903 - 3 February 1930) was an Australia, Australian Thoroughbred Australian Racing Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame racehorse. He won 19 races over distances ranging from five furlongs to three miles. Sixteen of these wins were "Principal Races" (equivalent to today's "Black Type" races), eight of them now of Group One, Group 1 (G1) status. As a three-year-old in 1906/07, Poseidon had 14 starts for 11 wins, including the Caulfield Cup (in race record time), Melbourne Cup, Victoria Derby and AJC Derby. In achieving this, Poseidon became the first horse to complete the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double.
