Henry The Hatter
Henry the Hatter is a retail store in Detroit, Michigan. It was founded by Henry Komrofsky in 1893. History Henry Komrofsky had worked as a hatter at the John C. Hartz shop before deciding to open up his own shop. Gustave Newman was a young stock and delivery boy for Komrofsky in the year 1904. In 1919, Newman and Komrofsky started to run the store as partners. Shortly after the two began their partnership, the store moved to the Library Park Hotel Building, on Gratiot and Library street. A second store was built in 1923 on Michigan avenue in the Lafayette Building. Henry Komrofsky died in 1941, and Newman continued to run the store. In the late 1940s, Newman sold the store to Seymour Wasserman, a New Yorker who worked in his uncle's factory before buying his own in 1939. In 1952, the original Gratiot Avenue store was demolished, and the store moved to Broadway street in Detroit, where it still stands today. Hat-making or millinery is the design, manufacture and sale of hats and other headwear. A person engaged in this trade is called a milliner or hatter. Historically, milliners, typically women shopkeepers, produced or imported an inventory of garments for men, women, and children and sold these garments in their millinery shop. Lafayette Building (Detroit)
The Lafayette Building was a high-rise office building located at 144 West Lafayette Boulevard in downtown Detroit, Michigan. It was built in 1923 and occupied a triangular lot, bordered by Michigan Avenue, West Lafayette Boulevard, and Shelby Street. The building was 14 floors tall, with one basement floor, and 13 above-ground floors. The office building was designed in the neo-classical architecture style by C. Howard Crane who built many of Detroit's theaters. It is built with mainly brick, limestone, and terra cotta. Its triangular form mimicked the Flatiron Building in Manhattan. The building contained of frontage along Michigan Avenue, of frontage along Shelby Street, of frontage along Lafayette Boulevard, and was in length along its east facade which stood mid-block. M-3 (Michigan Highway)
M-3 is a north–south state trunkline highway in the Detroit metropolitan area of the US state of Michigan. For most of its length, the trunkline is known as Gratiot Avenue (, ). The trunkline starts in Downtown Detroit and runs through the city in a northeasterly direction along one of Detroit's five major avenues. The highway passes several historic landmarks and through a historic district. It also connects residential neighborhoods on the city's east side with suburbs in Macomb County and downtown. Gratiot Avenue in Detroit was one of the original avenues laid out by Judge Augustus Woodward after the Detroit fire in 1805.
