Henry Reed (merchant)
Henry Reed (28 December 1806 – 10 October 1880) was an Australian landowner, shipowner, merchant, philanthropist and evangelist. Early life and work Reed was born at Doncaster, England, on 28 December 1806 to postmaster Samuel Reed (1773-1813) and his wife Mary, nee Rockcliff. When 13, Henry was apprenticed to a merchant at Hull. He left Britain as a steerage passenger on the ''Tiger'', reaching Hobart in April 1827. He travelled north to Launceston where he found work in the store of John Gleadow. In January 1828, he received a land grant of 640 acres (259 ha) at Nile riverlet. Other land aqusitions soon followed. He left Gleadow's employment and established himself as a general merchant. He also began to buy ships, that he employed in trading and whaling voyages. Doncaster
Doncaster (, ) is a city in South Yorkshire, England. Named after the River Don, it is the administrative centre of the larger City of Doncaster. It is the second largest settlement in South Yorkshire after Sheffield. Doncaster is situated in the Don Valley on the western edge of the Humberhead Levels and east of the Pennines. At the 2021 census, the city had a population of 308,100, while its built-up area had a population of 158,141 at the 2011 census. OMF International (formerly Overseas Missionary Fellowship and before 1964 the China Inland Mission) is an international and interdenominational Evangelical Christian missionary society with an international centre in Singapore. It was founded in Britain by Hudson Taylor on 25 June 1865. Overview The non-sectarian China Inland Mission was founded on principles of faith and prayer founded by James Hudson Taylor in 1865. Henry Reed Bay
Henry Reid Bay (sometimes Henry Reed Bay) is known locally as Homhovulu Harbor. It is a bay on the southerly coast of New Britain that opens into Wide Bay. It forms the furthest penetration of Wide Bay and is defined by Zungen Point on its north shore and Cape Turner on its southern shore. Wide Bay and Open Bay, on the northerly coast, form the isthmus separating the Gazelle Peninsula from the western part of the island. Etymology The bay was named by the Methodist missionary George Brown for his benefactor, the Tasmanian philanthropist, Henry Reed. Geography Henry Reid Bay is in the East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea. It opens into Wide Bay, which, in turn, opens into the Coral Sea. New Britain
New Britain ( tpi, Niu Briten) is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago, part of the Islands Region of Papua New Guinea. It is separated from New Guinea by a northwest corner of the Solomon Sea (or with an island hop of Umboi the Dampier and Vitiaz Straits) and from New Ireland by St. George's Channel. The main towns of New Britain are Rabaul/ Kokopo and Kimbe. The island is roughly the size of Taiwan. While the island was part of German New Guinea, it was named Neupommern ("New Pomerania"). In common with most of the Bismarcks it was largely formed by volcanic processes, and has active volcanoes including Ulawun (highest volcano nationally), Langila, the Garbuna Group, the Sulu Range, and the volcanoes Tavurvur and Vulcan of the Rabaul caldera.
