Henry Purdy (cricketer)
Henry Fox Purdy (17 January 1883 – 17 February 1943) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire between 1906 and 1919. Purdy was born at Brimington, Derbyshire, although his birth was registered as Henry Fox. He made his debut for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1906, Derbyshire in the 1906 season, in July in a match against Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, Nottinghamshire in which his uncle John Purdy (cricketer), John Purdy played his last match, and in which he took a wicket in each innings. He continued playing to the end of the season and against Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, Northamptonshire achieved his best bowling performance of 6 wickets for 84 runs. He played one game in the Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1907, 1907 season, and four in the Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1908, 1908 season. Brimington
Brimington is a large village and civil parish in the Borough of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, England. The population of the parish taken at the 2011 census was 8,788. The town of Staveley is to the east, and Hollingwood is nearby. The parish includes Brimington Common along the Calow Road, and New Brimington, a late 19th-century extension towards the Staveley Iron Works. History The route of Icknield Street, a Roman road, passes close to the village. Brimington appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Brimintune''. At that time, the manor was the property of King William I and the population was recorded as being sixteen villagers, two smallholders and one slave. Although there was a church in the village in the medieval period, it was a chapel of ease with the parish church being Chesterfield. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club
Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1919 was the first cricket season after a four-year break from first class cricket during World War I. The English club Derbyshire had been playing for forty-eight years with their twenty first season in the County Championship being notable that they won three matches in the County Championship to come ninth. 1919 season After the First World War, county cricket resumed in 1919 but everyone connected with the game had to put in much effort to create a very basic competition. Matches were restricted to two days to begin with, but the experiment was not repeated. Derbyshire played 14 matches in the County Championship and one against the Australian Imperial Forces. It was their fourteenth season in the County Championship and they won five matches to finish fourteenth in the Championship table. 1908 season Derbyshire played twenty games in the County Championship and one match against the touring Gentlemen of Philadelphia. The captain for the year was Reginald Rickman. Ernest Needham was top scorer and Arnold Warren took most wickets. The most significant additions to the Derbyshire squad in the season was Leonard Oliver who played regularly for Derbyshire until 1924. It was their thirteenth season in the County Championship and they finished bottom of the table having won two matches in the season. 1907 season Derbyshire played 22 games in the County Championship, one match against the touring South Africans and one against MCC. They lost all but three of the played matches, which were two wins and a draw, and ended at the bottom of the Championship table. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket.
