Henry J. Madill
Henry John Madill (30 March 1829, Hunterstown, Pennsylvania – 29 June 1899, Wysox, Pennsylvania) The son of Scotch-Irish emigrant Dr. Alexander Madill, was a lawyer and U.S. Army Colonel during the American Civil War. Madill was privately educated, and was admitted to the bar of Bradford County in 1851. He was elected major of the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves on June 22, 1861. On August 30, 1862, he was appointed colonel of the 141st Pennsylvania Infantry. On July 23, 1863, he commanded a brigade at The Battle of Manassas Gap. Hunterstown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 506. 141st Pennsylvania Infantry
The 141st Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was a volunteer infantry regiment that fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment served in the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater and was heavily engaged in the second day of fighting at the Peach Orchard outside of Gettysburg. History The regiment was organized in August 1862, with Henry J. Madill as colonel, Guy H. Watkins as lieutenant colonel, and Israel P. Spalding as major. It was known as the "Bradford Regiment" because most of the men were recruited from that county. It was sent to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where it was organized at Camp Curtin. After a couple of weeks, it was sent to picket the Potomac River in the area of Poolesville, Maryland. The regiment became part of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division of the III Corps. In the United States Armed Forces, a major general is a two-star general officer in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force. A major general ranks above a brigadier general and below a lieutenant general. The pay grade of major general is O-8. It is equivalent to the rank of rear admiral in the other United States uniformed services which use naval ranks. The 6th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment also known as the 35th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army as part of the Pennsylvania Reserves Infantry Division during the American Civil War. Bradford County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is part of Northeastern Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, its population was 59,967. Its county seat is Towanda. The county was created on February 21, 1810, from parts of Lycoming and Luzerne Counties. Originally called Ontario County, it was reorganized and separated from Lycoming County on October 13, 1812, and renamed Bradford County for William Bradford, who had been a chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and United States Attorney General.
