Henry Isaacs
Henry Isaacs (1831 – 2 August 1909, London) London-born, was a prominent Auckland, New Zealand general merchant from 1850 to 1875 principally through the firm known as E. and H. Isaacs. His elder brother Edward (1820—1891), who established the firm's Melbourne base in 1842, moved to Auckland in 1865 and they ran a troop provisioning business from central Auckland during the invasion of the Waikato. By centuries old tradition this, as with other army contracts, could on occasion be a lucrative business. The ''Auckland Star'' was an evening daily newspaper published in Auckland, New Zealand, from 24 March 1870 to 16 August 1991. Survived by its Sunday edition, the ''Sunday Star'', part of its name endures in ''The Sunday Star-Times'', created in the 1994 merger of the ''Dominion Sunday Times'' and the ''Sunday Star''. Originally published as the ''Evening Star'' from 24 March 1870 to 7 March 1879, the paper continued as the ''Auckland Evening Star'' between 8 March 1879 and 12 April 1887, and from then on as the ''Auckland Star''. Philip Philips
Philip Aaron Philips (11 June 1831 – 3 June 1913) was a New Zealand politician who served as the first mayor of Auckland City. He held the office from 1871 to 1874 and immediately prior to that, he was chairman of the City Board. He was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council and the Auckland Harbour Board. Early life and family Philips was born in Brighton, England, on 11 June 1831, into a Jewish family. He worked in a wholesale firm in London from 1845 to 1848. He then emigrated to New Zealand and arrived in Auckland in August 1848. After a year, he built himself a store in Vulcan Lane off Queen Street. After some years, he fell ill and went to Sydney for recovery. There, he married Annie Myers, the daughter of Israel and Esther Myers. The couple returned to Auckland and Philips opened a second hardware store; this one in lower Queen Street. He was bankrupted in the post-war economic bust following the New Zealand Wars. New Zealand Shipping Company
The New Zealand Shipping Company (NZSC) was a shipping company whose ships ran passenger and cargo services between Great Britain and New Zealand between 1873 and 1973. A group of Christchurch businessmen founded the company in 1873, similar groups formed in the other main centres, to counter the dominance of the Shaw Savill line controlled from London and the (Scotland-Dunedin) Albion line. There were seven initial directors: John Coster, chairman, George Gould Snr., (father of George Gould), John Thomas Peacock, William Reeves, Robert Heaton Rhodes, John Anderson, and Reginald Cobb (died 1873) representing the New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency. The similar groups of businessmen in Dunedin and Wellington soon joined this Christchurch company followed by the Auckland group. They completed the four-main-centre link in July 1873. Hon.
