Henry Howard, 2nd Viscount Bindon
Henry Howard, 2nd Viscount Bindon (c. 1542 - 1590), aristocrat and courtier Henry Howard was the son of Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon and Elizabeth Marney, daughter of John Marney, 2nd Baron Marney of Layer Marney and Christian Newburgh. Howard married Frances Meautys, daughter of Peter and Jane Meautys. Their daughter Douglas Howard married Sir Arthur Gorges in 1584. Howard had mental health problems, and was in prison at the time of his daughter's marriage. Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard Of Bindon
Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon (c. 1520 – 1582), was an English peer and politician. He was the youngest son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and Lady Elizabeth Stafford. He served as Custos Rotulorum of Dorset and Vice-Admiral of Dorset. In 1559, he was raised to the peerage as Viscount Howard of Bindon by Queen Elizabeth I of England, taking the title from Bindon Abbey in Dorset, many of whose former lands he held. John Marney, 2nd Baron Marney
John Marney, 2nd Baron Marney (by 1485 – 27 April 1525) of Layer Marney, Essex was an English Member of Parliament and Governor of Rochester Castle. He was the son of Henry Marney, 1st Baron Marney of Layer Marney and educated in the law at Lincoln's Inn. He succeeded his father in 1523 to the barony and his unfinished house of Layer Marney Tower. He was appointed keeper of Rochester Castle, Kent for life on 18 May 1509. He served under his father in the French campaign of 1513 and was present at Henry VIII’s meetings with the French King at the Field of Cloth of Gold. Jane Meutas (or Mewtas, or Mewtis, or Meautis, or Meautys) (c. 1517 – c. 1551) was an English lady of the Queen's privy chamber who became the wife of the courtier Peter Meutas (or Mewtas, etc.). Her name is sometimes given as Joan, and her maiden name was Astley. Her husband was knighted on 18 May 1544, when she became Lady Meutas. Sir Arthur Gorges (c. 1569 – 10 October 1625), was an English sea captain, poet, translator and courtier from Somerset. Origins He was the son of Sir William Gorges (d.1584) of Charlton, in the parish of Wraxall in Somerset, lord of the manor of Wraxall, by his wife Winifred Budockshed, heiress of the manor of Budockshed in the parish of St Budeaux, near Plymouth in Devon. Sir William Gorges was knighted in Ireland in 1579, was Vice Admiral of the Fleet in 1580, and Constable of the Tower of London. He died in December 1584, in the Tower of London. Arthur Gorges' brother Tristram Gorges (circa 1562 - 8 May 1608) was entrusted by Sir Francis Drake with the custody of Don Pedro de Valdez who was captured in the fight with the Spanish Armada in 1588. Mark Girouard
Mark Girouard (7 October 1931 – 16 August 2022) was a British architectural historian. He was an authority on the country house, and Elizabethan and Victorian architecture. Life and career Girouard was born on 7 October 1931. He was educated at Ampleforth College, read Classics at Christ Church, Oxford, and then worked for the magazine '' Country Life'' from about 1958 until 1967, firstly as a writer on architecture and then, from 1964, as its architectural editor. He was Slade Professor of Fine Art from 1975 to 1976 and elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1987. Girouard was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2011. He was on the board of trustees of The Architecture Foundation from 1992 to 1999 and a founder, and the first chairman, of the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust. Lulworth Castle
Lulworth Castle, in East Lulworth, Dorset, England, situated south of the village of Wool, is an early 17th-century hunting lodge erected in the style of a revival fortified castle, one of only five extant Elizabethan or Jacobean buildings of this type. It is listed with Historic England as a Scheduled monument. It is also Grade I listed. The 18th-century Adam style interior of the stone building was devastated by fire in 1929, but has now been restored and serves as a museum. The castle stands in Lulworth Park on the Lulworth Estate. The park and gardens surrounding the castle are Grade II listed with Historic England. Thomas Howard, 3rd Viscount Howard of Bindon (died 1611) was an English peer and politician. He was a Knight of the Garter, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset 25 April 1601 – 1 March 1611, Custos Rotulorum of Dorset before 1605–1611, and Vice-Admiral of Dorset 1603–1611. He was the son of Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon, youngest son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. He succeeded to the viscountcy in 1590, upon the childless death of his elder brother, Henry. The title became extinct when he died in 1611 without male children. Viscount Howard Of Bindon
Viscount Howard of Bindon was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1559 for Thomas Howard, second son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. His two sons, the second and third Viscount, both succeeded him in the title. As neither had any male children, the title became extinct on the death of the third Viscount in 1611. The title referred to Bindon Abbey in Dorset. The title is in some sources referred to as Viscount Bindon. The Bindon title was revived in 1706 when another member of the Howard family, Henry Howard, Lord Walden, was made Earl of Bindon.
