Henry Gullett
Sir Henry Somer Gullett KCMG CB (26 March 1878 – 13 August 1940), known as Harry Gullett, was an Australian journalist, military historian and politician. He was a war correspondent during World War I and co-authored the official history of Australia's involvement in the war. He later served in federal parliament from 1925 to 1940 and held senior ministerial office. Gullett grew up in country Victoria. He left school at the age of 12 but began a career in journalism through family connections. During World War I he was attached to Australian units on the Western Front and the Sinai and Palestine campaign, and also did work for the War Records Section. He contributed a volume to the ''Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918''. Gullett was elected to parliament in 1925 as an "independent Nationalist". He joined S. M. Frederick Francis (Australian Politician)
Frederick Henry Francis (1881 – 15 August 1949) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1919 to 1925, representing the Victorian seat of Henty as a Nationalist-aligned independent. He also served a term as mayor of the City of Malvern. Early life Francis was born at Port Melbourne and was a builder and then an estate agent before entering politics. He was a City of Malvern councillor for sixteen years, including a stint as mayor. He was also a justice of the peace. He had attempted to enlist in World War I but was rejected. He was an unsuccessful candidate at the 1917 state election. Lucy Gullett
Lucy Edith Gullett (28 September 1876 – 12 November 1949) was an Australian medical practitioner and philanthropist. Early life and education Lucy Edith Gullett was born in Hawthorn in Melbourne to journalist Henry Gullett and Lucy, ''née'' Willie. She was educated at Sydney Girls' High School and the University of Sydney, taking her degree in 1902. Career Gullett was the first resident medical officer at the Crown Street Women's Hospital from 1901 to 1902 and resident surgeon at Brisbane's Hospital for Sick Children from 1902 to 1903. She was a GP at Bathurst from 1906 to 1911, when she returned to Wahroonga to live with her sister Minnie. The sisters campaigned together for mental health reform, but Lucy's medical practice declined as she had less need for income. Henry Gullett (New South Wales Politician)
Henry Gullett (20 January 1837 – 4 August 1914) was an English-born Australian journalist and politician. He was born in South Devon to stonemason Henry Gullett. He migrated to Australia in 1853 to follow the gold rush, and then worked on his father's farm at Lancefield in Victoria. He returned to England in 1861, and then to Australia in 1863 to work as a journalist for the '' Argus''. In 1872 he married fellow journalist Lucy Willie, with whom he had four daughters. Their daughter, Lucy Gullett would go on to pursue a medical career. He was editor of the ''Australasian'' in Melbourne (1872-1885). Gullett spent time in Ceylon as an editor and from 1885 was based in Sydney as assistant editor of the ''Daily Telegraph''. Barbara Janet Baynton (née Lawrence; 4 June 1857 – 28 May 1929) was an Australian writer known primarily for her short stories about life in the bush. She published the collection '' Bush Studies'' (1902) and the novel ''Human Toll'' (1907), as well as writing for '' The Bulletin'' and ''The Sydney Morning Herald''. Henry Baynton Somer "Jo" Gullett, AM, MC (16 December 1914 – 24 August 1999) was an Australian soldier, politician, grazier, diplomat and journalist. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941).
