Henry Chandos Pole Gell
Henry Chandos Pole Gell (10 January 1829 – 31 October 1902) was a High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1886/7. He took the additional surname Gell when he inherited the Gell fortune in 1842. Biography Henry Chandos Pole was the second son of Edward Sacheverell Chandos Pole, of Radbourne Hall. In 1842, he took the arms and surname Gell when he succeeded to the estate at Hopton Hall. Gell was High Sheriff in 1866/7. For many years main residence was at Heverswood (south of Brasted) in Kent as he leased Hopton Hall to a relative. Gell took an active interest in agricultural development, and was a member of the council of the Royal Agricultural Society of England. St Mary's Church, Wirksworth
St Mary the Virgin is a parish church in the Church of England in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. It is a Grade I listed building. The existing building dates mostly from the 13th–15th centuries, but notable survivals from the Anglo-Saxon period indicate a church has stood on this site since at least the 8th century AD. It was Victorian restoration, restored in 1820, then in 1870 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, Gilbert Scott. Description The church is notable for its Anglo-Saxon art, Anglo-Saxon carvings, and a large Anglo-Saxon coffin lid which was discovered under the chancel floor near the sanctuary in 1820. It is now mounted on the north wall of the nave. It appears to date from the second half of the 7th century. The church is also noted for containing an Anglo-Saxon carving of a Derbyshire lead mining history, lead miner, "T'owd Man", the oldest representation of a miner anywhere in the world. Thomas Henry Ismay (7 January 1837 – 23 November 1899) was the founder of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, more commonly known as the White Star Line. His son Joseph Bruce Ismay was managing director of the ''White Star Line''; and, in 1912, he sailed on the maiden voyage of the ocean liner . Early years Thomas Ismay was born on 7 January 1837, in a small cottage in the town of Maryport, Cumberland. Some time after Thomas's birth, his father Joseph Ismay started a timber business, shipbrokers and shipbuilder. He bought shares in five vessels coming in and out of Maryport.
