Hennessy Cognac Cup
The Hennessy Cognac Cup was a biennial team golf tournament contested from 1976 to 1984. The contests in 1976, 1978 and 1980 were between teams of professional male golfers; one team representing Great Britain and Ireland, the other team representing Continental Europe. There was also an earlier event, in 1974, played at Sotogrande in Spain, not sponsored by Hennessy. In 1982 a third team, the Rest of the World, was added and the event became a stroke-play contest with an individual prize. The 1984 event was run on a different basis, with 10 national teams competing. The tournament was played in years when there was no Ryder Cup. The first matches between a team representing Great Britain and Ireland and a team representing Continental Europe were played for the Joy Cup from 1954 to 1958. Francisco Abreu
Francisco Abreu (born 30 August 1943) is a Spanish professional golfer. Being a former wrestler from Tenerife, Spain, Abreu turned professional in 1968 and played on the European Tour from its first official season in 1972 until 1980. He was known as along hitter and won the 1973 German Open, at Golf Club Hubbelrath, close to Düsseldorf, Germany, and the 1976 Madrid Open at Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro, Madrid, Spain. At his second win, he was 9 strokes ahead of fellow country man Antonio Garrido on second place. His best Order of Merit finish of ninth came in 1977. Tommy Horton
Thomas Alfred Horton, (16 June 1941 – 7 December 2017) was an English professional golfer. He finished in the top ten of the Open Championship four times, won a number of important tournaments both before and after the founding of the European Tour in 1972 and played in the Ryder Cup in 1975 and 1977. He reached 50 just before the founding of the European Seniors Tour and won 23 times on the tour between 1992 and 2000. Early life Horton was born in St Helens, Merseyside; he moved to Jersey in 1945 and was brought up and educated on the island. Bernard Gallacher
Bernard Gallacher, OBE (born 9 February 1949) is a Scottish professional golfer. Early life and amateur career Gallacher was born in Bathgate, Scotland. He took up golf at the age of eleven. In 1965 he won the Lothians Golf Association Boys Championship. He won the 1967 Scottish Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship and turned professional the same year. Professional career He won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award in 1968. Neil Coles
Neil Chapman Coles, MBE (born 26 September 1934) is an English professional golfer. Coles had a successful career in European golf, winning 29 important tournaments between 1956 and 1982. After reaching 50, he won a further 14 important Seniors tournaments between 1985 and 2002, winning his final European Seniors Tour event at the age of 67. Brian Barnes (golfer)
Brian William Barnes (3 June 1945 – 9 September 2019) was a professional golfer. He won nine times on the European Tour between 1972 and 1981 and twice won the Senior British Open. Barnes played in six consecutive Ryder Cup matches from 1969 to 1979. He was noted for having beaten Jack Nicklaus twice in one day in singles match play, during the 1975 Ryder Cup on 21 September, winning 4&2 in the morning round and 2&1 in the afternoon session. Brian George Charles Huggett, (born 18 November 1936) is a Welsh professional golfer. He won sixteen events on the European circuit, including two after the formal start of the European Tour in 1972. In 1968 he won the Harry Vardon Trophy for leading the Order of Merit. He played in the Ryder Cup six times and was a non-playing captain. Donald Swaelens (1935 – 25 April 1975) was a Belgian professional golfer. Golf career Like his father Jules, Swaelens made his career as a club professional at Royal Latem Golf Club. He also worked as a touring professional, intermittently playing on the European circuit. Jean Garaïalde
Jean Garaïalde (born 2 October 1934) is a French professional golfer. Garaïalde was born in Ciboure, Pyrénées-Atlantiques. He turned professional in 1952. In 1969, he became the first French golfer since Firmin Cavalo in 1948 to claim his own national open. Around that time, he won several other national opens around Europe, including the German Open in 1969 and 1970 and the Spanish Open also in 1969. In his home country, Garaïalde was dominant winning 12 French PGA titles between 1960 and 1982, including seven in a row from 1962, 17 French Native Opens between 1957 and 1987, and 12 French Professional Championships between 1968 and 1985. Ángel Gallardo (golfer)
Ángel Gallardo (born 29 July 1943) is a Spanish professional golfer. Gallardo was a member of the European Tour from its first official season in 1972 until 1982. He finished in the top one hundred of the European Tour Order of Merit in each of those eleven seasons, with a best ranking of tenth in 1977. His only official European Tour win was the 1977 Italian Open however he did win the 1967 Portuguese Open and the 1970 Spanish Open, events that would soon be enfolded into the European Tour schedule. He also won the 1971 Mexican Open. He was the second non-British golfer to be elected as Captain of the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland in 1982. Johannes Gerardus Maria Dorrestein (9 August 1945 – 5 April 2023) was a Dutch professional golfer. Early life Dorrestein was born in Soest, Netherlands on 9 August 1945.
