Francisco Abreu
Francisco Abreu (born 30 August 1943) is a Spanish professional golfer. Being a former wrestler from Tenerife, Spain, Abreu turned professional in 1968 and played on the European Tour from its first official season in 1972 until 1980. He was known as along hitter and won the 1973 German Open, at Golf Club Hubbelrath, close to Düsseldorf, Germany, and the 1976 Madrid Open at Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro, Madrid, Spain. At his second win, he was 9 strokes ahead of fellow country man Antonio Garrido on second place. His best Order of Merit finish of ninth came in 1977. From 1994 to 1999 he played on the European Seniors Tour. He did not win at that tour, but had some success on the senior level by winning the 1999 Spanish Seniors Professional Closed Championship and twice finish second in that tournament. 1976 European Tour
The 1976 European Tour was a series of golf tournaments that comprised the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tournament Players’ Division circuit. It is officially recognised as the fifth season of the PGA European Tour. Historically, the PGA's Order of Merit only included tournaments in Great Britain and Ireland, but in 1970 events in continental Europe were included for the first time. The circuit and organisation evolved further over the following years, adopting the name ''PGA European Golf Tour'' in 1979. The season was made up of 21 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and some non-counting tournaments that later became known as "Approved Special Events". The Double Diamond International was a team golf tournament that was played from 1971 to 1977. It was hosted in England for the first three years, and then in Scotland. From 1974 and 1977 the event was preceded by an individual 36-hole stroke play tournament that was included on the British PGA tournament circuit; the circuit would later become officially recognised as the European Tour. Hennessy Cognac Cup
The Hennessy Cognac Cup was a biennial team golf tournament contested from 1976 to 1984. The contests in 1976, 1978 and 1980 were between teams of professional male golfers; one team representing Great Britain and Ireland, the other team representing Continental Europe. There was also an earlier event, in 1974, played at Sotogrande in Spain, not sponsored by Hennessy. In 1982 a third team, the Rest of the World, was added and the event became a stroke-play contest with an individual prize. The 1984 event was run on a different basis, with 10 national teams competing. The tournament was played in years when there was no Ryder Cup. The first matches between a team representing Great Britain and Ireland and a team representing Continental Europe were played for the Joy Cup from 1954 to 1958. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. It is organised by the R&A. The Open is one of the four men's major golf tournaments, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.
