Henk Van Der Grift
Hendrik ("Henk") van der Grift (born 25 December 1935) is a retired Dutch speed skater. At the 1960 Winter Olympics van der Grift finished 10th on the 500 m and fell on the 1500 m. Not satisfied with training facilities in the Netherlands, he lived in Norway for a while, working as a car mechanic. The superior training facilities in Norway paid off and van der Grift won silver at the 1961 European Allround Championships behind Olympic Champion Viktor Kosichkin. This was the first Dutch medal in international championships in eight years and it made van der Grift one of the favourites for the World Allround Championships. And van der Grift delivered: in what turned out to be his greatest year, he became the 1961 World Allround Champion in Gothenburg. Breukelen
Breukelen () is a town and former municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It is situated to the north west of Utrecht, along the river Vecht and close to the lakes of the Loosdrechtse Plassen, an area of natural and tourist interest. It is located in an area called the Vechtstreek. It is the namesake of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. History During the 17th century, many wealthy Amsterdam merchant families built their mansions along the river Vecht. In Disaster Year 1672 the village and no less than 8 castles and mansions near Breukelen were severely damaged by warfare. Most of them were burned down by the French. Oscar Mathisen Award
Since 1959, the Oscar Mathisen Award (also known as the Oscar Mathisen Memorial Award, the Oscar Mathisen Memorial Trophy, and sometimes the Skating Oscar) is awarded annually for outstanding speed skating performance of the season. The award was introduced by Oslo Skøiteklub (Oslo Skating Club, OSK) to commemorate the legendary Norwegian speed skater Oscar Mathisen (1888–1954). Until 1967, speed skaters could not win the award more than once and until 1987, women were not eligible to win the award. The winner is awarded a miniature of the statue of Oscar Mathisen created by the sculptor Arne Durban. Jonny Nilsson
Erling Martin Jonny Nilsson (9 February 1943 – 22 June 2022) was a Swedish competitive speed skater. He was the men's Olympic champion in the 10 000 m skating in 1964. Biography Aged 19 Nilsson made his international debut at the European Allround Championships in 1962, finishing 15th. Nilsson had trouble with the 500 m, which clearly showed at the World Allround Championships two weeks later – despite a 1st place on the 10,000 m and a 2nd place on the 5000 m, he finished only 10th overall because he had finished the 500 m in 45th place. For his accomplishments, Nilsson received the 1962 Oscar Mathisen Award. The next year at the World Allround Championships, he finished 23rd on the 500 m, but with a 6th place on the 1500 m and wins on both the 5,000 m and the 10000 m (both in new world record times), he made up his deficit and became World Allround Champion with a new world record samalog for the combination of the four distances. ... Henk Nijdam
Henk Nijdam (26 August 1935 – 30 April 2009) was a Dutch road and track cyclist. His sporting career began with Fortuna Zundert. On track, he finished in fifth place in the 4 km team pursuit at the 1960 Summer Olympics. He also won a gold and a bronze medals in the individual pursuit at world championships in 1962 and 1963. His best achievements on the road were winning the Olympia's Tour in 1964 and two stages of the Tour de France in 1964 and 1966. Nijdam was the father of cyclist Jelle Nijdam. Eef Kamerbeek
Evert "Eef" Kamerbeek (17 March 1934 – 26 August 2008) was one of the best Dutch decathletes of all time. Between 1954 and 1964, he won 11 national decathlon titles, as well as seven titles in the 110 m hurdles and four titles in the 200 m hurdles, discus throw and javelin throw; he also occasionally competed in weight lifting. He missed the 1956 Summer Olympics due to their boycott by the Netherlands; at the 1960 Summer Olympics he finished fifth, while he failed to reach the final at the 1964 Games due to a back injury. At European championships, Kamerbeek finished in sixth and fourth place in 1958 and 1962, respectively. Kamerbeek was selected as the Dutch Sportsman of the year 1960. The Jaap Edenbaan (translated: Jaap Eden track) is an ice rink located in the Watergraafsmeer, a neighborhood of eastern Amsterdam. The rink is named after the famous Dutch ice skater Jaap Eden. It contains a 400-meter lane and Jaap Edenhal. The hall is the home of the Amsterdam Tigers of the BeNe League.
