The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent ( nl, Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent, KASK) is an art school that is one of the oldest art schools in Belgium. It is now part of the Hogeschool Gent. History The Academy was founded in 1748 as a school for drawing by the painter, Philippe Karel Marissal, at his home. During his studies in Paris, Marissal had become impressed by the , and was inspired to create a similar establishment in his home city. The Academy was granted a royal charter in 1771 by empress Maria Theresa of Austria. In 1995, the Academy was one of the sixteen educational institutions that were merged into the Hogeschool Gent. The House of Arenberg is an aristocratic lineage that is constituted by three successive families that took their name from Arenberg, a small territory of the Holy Roman Empire in the Eifel region. The inheritance of the House of Croÿ-Aarschot made the Arenbergs the wealthiest and most influential noble family of the Habsburg Netherlands. The family's Duchy of Arenberg was mediatized in 1810. As such, the Arenbergs belong to the small group of families that constitute the ''Hochadel'' (). Liévin De Winne
Liévin De Winne (Ghent, 24 January 1821 - Brussels, 13 May 1880) was a Belgian portrait painter who painted the official portrait of Leopold I of Belgium, Leopold I on which the first postage stamp of Belgium was based. De Winne was a pupil of Félix De Vigne and Henri van der Haert at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Ghent), Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent. In 1850 he received a grant from the government of Belgium that enabled him to travel to Paris and from 1852 to 1855 he was able to share a studio with Jules Breton who subsequently wrote De Winne's biography. From 1861, De Winne resumed residency in Belgium where he established himself as a portrait painter to high society.
