Hendrick Sorgh
Hendrick Sorgh (baptized 6 November 1666 - buried 23 January 1720) was a broker and art collector in Amsterdam. Ancestry His father Marten Sorgh (ca 1641-1702) was registered as a silk trader when he became an Amsterdam citizen in 1665. Sorgh, who came from Rotterdam, probably was the son of the painter Hendrick Martensz Sorgh and Adriaantje Hollaer, but being from a Remonstrant family not always a birth certificate did survive. His mother Elisabeth Rombouts was the daughter of Jacob Romboutsz, an Amsterdam silk trader. In the summer of 1675, Vermeer borrowed 1,000 guilders in Amsterdam from Jacob Romboutsz, using Maria Thins, his mother-in-law's property as a surety. Her grandfather was Arminius, a Remonstrant theologian. His parents married in May 1665. Their first child Hendrick was baptized at home, like all of his brothers and sisters. Collection In 1693 Hendrick became a poorter of Amsterdam. He lived on Keizersgracht. Sorgh had an impressive art collection of 67 pa ...

Huchtenburg
J(oh)an and Jacob van Huchtenburg (also known as Hughtenburg or Hugtenburg(h)) were two Dutch Golden Age painters in the second half of the seventeenth century. Both brothers were natives of Haarlem, moved to Paris, but died in Amsterdam. The main source about their lives is from Arnold Houbraken. Some of the information from the 19th century is contradictive. Jacob van Huchtenburg (1644, Haarlem - bur. January 8, 1675, Amsterdam) studied under Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. In 1662 he went to Italy and stayed in Rome until 1667. On his way back to Holland he stayed in Paris for more than a year, where he probably met up with his brother Jan. In 1669 he joined the Haarlem artists' guild. His pictures are probably confounded with those of his brother. He became well-to-do and lived on Prinsengracht. One is in the Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu. Jan van Huchtenburg (bapt. November 20, 1647, Haarlem - bur. July 2, 1733, Amsterdam), was a famous Dutch horse and battle painter, like Esa ...

Jan Lievens
Jan Lievens (24 October 1607 – 4 June 1674) was a Dutch Golden Age painter who was associated with his close contemporary Rembrandt, a year older, in the early parts of their careers. They shared a birthplace in Leiden, training with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, where they shared a studio for about five years until 1631. Like Rembrandt he painted both portraits and history paintings, but unlike him Lievens' career took him away from Amsterdam to London, Antwerp, The Hague and Berlin. Biography According to Arnold Houbraken, Jan was the son of Lieven Hendriksze, an embroiderer (''borduurwerker''), and was trained by Joris Verschoten. He was sent to Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam at ''about the age of 10'' for two full years. After that he began his career as an independent artist, at ''about the age of 12'' in Leiden.

Jan Steen
Jan Havickszoon Steen (c. 1626 – buried 3 February 1679) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, one of the leading genre painters of the 17th century. His works are known for their psychological insight, sense of humour and abundance of colour. Life Steen was born in Leiden, a town in Southern Holland, where his well-to-do, Catholic family were brewers who ran the tavern ''The Red Halbert'' for two generations. Steen's father even leased him a brewery of his own in Delft from the years 1654 until 1657. He was the eldest of eight or more children. Like his even more famous contemporary Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen attended the Latin school and became a student in Leiden. Though no official records of Steen's artistic training are preserved, contemporary sources tell us he received his painterly education from three men, Nicolaes Knupfer (1603–1660), a German painter of historical and figurative scenes in Utrecht, Adriaen van Ostade, and Jan van Goyen, who would later become ...
