Helsingfors Segelsällskap r.f. (HSS), ''Helsinki Sailing Society'', is the second oldest yacht club in Helsinki, established in 1893. The yacht club has 1000+ members and mainly sail boats in the register. The club is located on Liuskasaari island in the middle of southern Helsinki. Liuskasaari is a few minutes ferry ride away from Merisatamanranta. HSS hosts a popular full service guest harbor for 20 boats. The club also has a substantial contingent of expat sailors residing in Helsinki. The Largest Classic Fleet in the Nordics Helsingfors Segelsällskap is renowned for its eighty boats strong classic fleet and its AUDI HSS Match Racing Centre and frequent sailing competitions. The classic fleet consists of yachts mainly in the Metre boat classes. Hai (keelboat)
Hai (Finnish, lit. Shark) or Requin (French, lit. Shark) is a one-design, sloop-rigged keelboat designed in Finland. It was designed in 1930 by Finnish sailboat designer Gunnar Stenbäck as a cheap racing and cruising yacht suitable for mass production. It remains a popular small yacht in Finland and France. History In the 1920s, one-design yacht classes were relatively scarce and dominating form of yacht racing were various construction classes, which' boats were designed and built one at the time, and thus were quite expensive. Many Nordic top sailors and designers expressed concern about the future of the sport, and Stenbäck argued strongly that only in one-design class the costs could be kept suitably low. Sailing At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was held 29 July – 11 August 2012 at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Weymouth. The 2012 sailing program consisted of a total of ten events (eight classes). Eleven fleet races were scheduled off the coast at Weymouth Bay for each event, except for the 49er and the Elliott 6m classes. For the 49er class, a total of 16 races were scheduled. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) were scheduled as opening races and the last one as medal race. For the Elliott 6m a series of match races was scheduled. The sailing was done on different types of courses. Venue According to the IOC statutes the contests in all sport disciplines must be held either in, or as close as possible to the city which the IOC has chosen. Silja Lehtinen
Silja Lehtinen (born 5 November 1985 in Helsinki) is a Finnish sailor. Lehtinen studies medicine at the University of Helsinki. Silja Lehtinen has sailed in two Olympic regattas. In 2008, at the age of 23, she skippered the Finnish team in the Yngling class to an 11th place. In 2012, she participated in Women's Match Race (Elliott 6m) and won a bronze medal with her crew, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff. In 2012 as well, only a month before the Olympic regatta, Lehtinen and her crew won match race world championship title in Gothenburg, Sweden. Her brother Lauri skippered the Finnish 49er into seventh place at the 2012 Olympic regatta.
