Hellfire Club was a name for several exclusive clubs for high-society rakes established in Britain and Ireland in the 18th century. The name most commonly refers to Francis Dashwood's Order of the Friars of St. Francis of Wycombe. Such clubs, rumour had it, served as the meeting places of "persons of quality"Ashe p.48. who wished to take part in what were socially perceived as immoral acts, and the members were often involved in politics. Neither the activities nor membership of the clubs are easy to ascertain. The Hellfire Club is a fictional society appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The Hellfire Club often comes into confrontation with the mutant superhero team, the X-Men. Although the Club appears to merely be an international social club for wealthy elites, its clandestine Inner Circle seeks to influence world events, in accordance with their own agenda. ''The Hellfire Club'' is a 1961 film inspired by the historical Hellfire Club, Sir Francis Dashwood's infamous 'Gentlemen's' society of the 18th century. It starred Keith Michell and featured Peter Cushing in a small cameo as enigmatic attorney Mr Merryweather. According to the film, the club was famed for its depravity, debauchery, and devil worship. Although not a Hammer Film Productions, Hammer Films production, there are visual similarities.
