Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Annemarieke van Rumpt (born 29 April 1980 in Middelharnis) is a rower from the Netherlands. Van Rumpt took part in the World Championships of 2003 in Milan winning the silver medal in the four. With the Dutch eights she qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and she and her team mates rowed to the bronze medal. They won another bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships in Gifu. Femke Dekker
Femke Dekker (born 11 July 1979) is a Dutch rower from the Netherlands. Dekker started rowing in 1990 and made her international debut in the double sculls at the 1995 Junior World Championships in Poznań. Together with Christel Rijnten she won the bronze medal. The following year Dekker became World Junior Champion in the four with Rijnten, Karin Klinge and Maartje Breeman in Glasgow. In 1997 she finished fifth in the single scull race at the Junior World Championships in Hazewinkel. She kept on rowing the single scull in 1998 with winning a bronze medal in the Nations Cup. In 1999 in the double sculls with Annemieke Klaren she was unsuccessful. Dekker and Marloes Bolman qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and became 10th in the coxless pairs.
